The Worst Ways to Select Education Apps - Connect Learning Today

The Worst Ways to Select Education Apps - Connect Learning Today | Teaching and Learning software and topics | Scoop.it
The challenge for educators now, as is the case with every other wave of hardware tools in the classroom, is to figure out how to best use tablets to help improve student-learning outcomes.
A/Prof Jon Willis's insight:

Not sure I agree with some of these reasons, but then it boils down to what "select" means in this content. If select means try for yourself, then I disagree with most of this; if it means assign to a task, then I probably agree, but why would you assign an app to a task if you hadn't tried it out yourself first? App discovery is a passion for me, and I tend to try lots that don't work for every one that does.

Applying Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to the Use of Educational Technology

Applying Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to the Use of Educational Technology | Teaching and Learning software and topics | Scoop.it

Putting the technology into the hands of students and helping them to understand how to use it in a way that leads to their own self-actualisation can also be a perfectly legitimate goal in itself. If we do this though, we should be sure that the technology we teach students about has genuine functionality for them outside of the classroom and measuring this against Maslow’s hierarchy is a good way to do this.

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy -

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy - | Teaching and Learning software and topics | Scoop.it
The Padagogy Wheel is designed to help educators think – systematically, coherently, and with a view to long term, big-picture outcomes – about how they use mobile apps in their teaching. The Padagogy Wheel is all about mindsets; it’s a way of thinking about digital-age education that meshes together concerns about mobile app features, learning transformation, motivation, cognitive development and long-term learning objectives.

The Padagogy Wheel, though, is not rocket science. It is an everyday device that can be readily used by everyday teachers; it can be applied to everything from curriculum planning and development, to writing learning objectives and designing centered activities. The idea is for the users to respond to the challenges that the Wheel presents for their teaching practices, and to ask themselves the tough questions about their choices and methods.

This looks very promising, and the price is right for teachers without funding sources. It seems more intuitive in its layout and offers a broad range of assignment types.

Next-Generation eLearning: Learning Quests Combine Original Content, Story, Curation, and Gamification by Fiona Quigley : Learning Solutions Magazine | Teaching and Learning software and topics | Scoop.it
Most eLearning design is still stuck in the 1990s. Can’t we easily replicate the type of online or app experience that most of us now take for granted outside the workplace? And why hasn’t this happened already? It may only require some reframing of the design and development process, and that has led to this concept of a learning quest. Read about it here!

Formative Assessment Matters More Now

Formative Assessment Matters More Now | Teaching and Learning software and topics | Scoop.it
Waters (2012) suggested that every minute a teacher spends on formative assessment is a minute lost from instruction (p. 8). But I doubt that formative assessment and instruction are really a zero-sum game. As my master teacher told me over 20 years ago, a good assessment should be a learning experience too. The trick, I…
