The fact that local media slandered their teachers in the manner of which they did is upsetting. Do parents deserve to know their children are in professional, knowledgeable hands? Absolutely! Do the local newspapers, new stations, and reporters need  damage the names of professionals based on one standardized tests alone? No. Here is why... because we deal with humans. Cognition and intellect are not the only factors that contribute to test results. Students’ health, home life (did they get food, rest, basic needs being met?), school attendance, class sizes and curriculum can all impact the score. To determine a teacher as "the worst" because of standardized test scores in not fair. Evaluation should be continuous, provide supportive feedback and also bring opportunities for growth along the way.

Jillian Schaibly's curator insight, July 25, 2017 9:15 PM
This resource reinstates the important for collaboration with teacher evaluations. This article is a little older but it shares the struggle of teacher evaluations. Administrators need to understand that evaluations are meant to assess teachers but offer feedback to help them grow and improve in their profession.

I hope others will find value in how the teacher evaluation system is working in Maryland, teacher opinions, and the component of using student scores.

This article talks about teachers effectiveness being based on test scores. The author brings into the fact of poverty and how many students that Live in poverty are thinking about other things besides school, like a safe home and food. Those factors are not factored in in text scores. Administration needs to be aware of students needs not just learning.

I hope this resource offers insight for others seeking a guide to teacher effectiveness and evaluation.

Erin Ryan's curator insight, October 15, 2015 8:40 PM

“Next-generation educator effectiveness systems need to be designed so they fairly evaluate educators, continually build educator capacity, provide ongoing career development and, ultimately, improve learning outcomes for all students,” said Kelly Burling, Ph.D., Director of Pearson’s Center for Educator Effectiveness. What is key in this is the collaborative nature of which teacher evaluation is being addressed. Administrators, parents, community members and teachers work together to build a system that reflects an effective educator.
