Cultura Express 4 - Lesson C4 -Topic / Vocabulary

Suggested Procedures:

Pre-viewing:

Content revision: Teacher recycles examples of natural disasters studied in the previous class - lesson C4 -  and briefly explains the context in which the videoclip was filmed. She elicits information about the bands concerned (U2 and Green Day) and any other curiosities students might know about the video/song.

While-viewing / Post-viewing:

Students receive a handout with the following questions, which they should answer in pairs (numbers 2 and 4 can be answered orally):

      1. Which natural disasters can you identify in the video?

      2. Pay attention to the first lines of the song in the cover version, which is a fragment from the American folk song The House of the Rising Sun.

“There is a house in New Orleans, they call the Rising Sun
It's been the ruin of many a poor boy, and God, I know I'm one.”

How are they related to the topic discussed in the video clip? Talk in pairs.

      3. Focus on the scene presented at 1:40’. In the video, who plays the role of “the saints”?

     4. What is written on the sign shown in the very end of the video clip? What is being criticized here? Talk in pairs.
