Meet The Education Standards At The Center Of A Firestorm

Meet The Education Standards At The Center Of A Firestorm | Each One Teach One, Each One Reach One | Scoop.it
MIDDLETOWN, Del. (AP) — Remembering the plot of a short story is no longer good enough in teacher Amy Lawson's fifth-grade classroom. Today's students are being asked to think more critically.
Mr. David Burton's insight:

Critcism of Common Core comes from those from all over the political road map and not simply from those alligned with "Tea Party" ideology(ies). The heart of such criticism is, as this article points out, a misunderstanding of that "Common Core" is and what it is not.

DBQ struggles for AP US History??

If your students are like mine, they probably struggle with DBQ essays. I constantly battle with them about the difference between writing a DBQ essay in which the documents support the essay rather than an essay about the documents. Following two days of class discussion (Friday and Monday) on specific information for the 2000 "organized labor" DBQ, I then had the students write the essay on Tuesday...yikes...essays ABOUT the documents.

While thinking things through last night after grading several of the essays, I had an idea which I used today. think I may have had luck with today's lesson, but time will tell when they write their next DBQ.

We read through the sample essays from the College Board's AP Central site. As we read through them (students each had a paper copy) we used a Sharpie marker to cross out any information directly related to a document. What's left should be the outside information. As they compared each of the three sample essays, focusing on what was or was not crossed out there were lots of "ooooos" and "ahhhhs" and "I get its". They could tell that the "3" essay was almost completely crossed out while the "6" had more remaining and the "9" had more remaining still.  They then compared the merits of the remnants from the "6" and "9" to see the differences in quality of the outside information provided.

I truly think this helped them out and maybe a similar activity would help your students :-)

Let me know your results!!
