TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION (from the Watson article)

1. What functions did poetry play in traditional Chinese society? What motives would lead an educated Chinese man or woman to compose poetry? What were looked on as the qualifications for writing poetry?

2. Why was poetry writing one of the requirements for persons taking the civil service exams? What good or bad effects might this have had on the development of poetry in Tang times? (Note that poetry was easy to grade on technical grounds. Also that making it a requirement on the exam meant that persons from all over the Chinese empire had to master the system of rhymes in use in the capital are, i.e., to learn the standard Chinese pronunciation of the time.)

3. What themes seem to be most important in Chinese poetry? What themes that are of major importance in other poetic traditions absent or of minor importance? What characteristics of Chinese society or thought does this reflect?

As a learning extension, you may wish to examine these representative poems of the Tang Dynasty:

Abstract:This article traces the history of Chinese poetry which begun around 600 B.C.E. with the compilation of an anthology, the Shi Jing, containing poems that probably date back several centuries earlier. It has generally been agreed by Chinese critics that the peak in literary achievement was reached during the Tang dynasty, which ruled China from C.E. 618 to 907.
