I believe this is a huge problem that effects the body as a whole creating many different health complications.  The government as well as other organizations have done a great job with getting out country back on track creating a new social norm.   It is hard to reach for the healthier option for many different reasons that include the what will people think, what's available, what's cheaper, and the image of it's okay for young people (college kids especially) to eat like crap.

Obesity has harmful effects. Obesity can put children at risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, respiratory problems, and other health conditions. Obesity has a formula to it called body mass index ( BMI ). BMI is calculated by dividing body weight by height squared. Childhood obesity is above 25 or above the 95th percentile. BMI doesn't measure body fat directly, but its a reasonable indicator of body fat for most children and teens. Childhood obesity numbers are still too high. Advances are being made in addressing the epidemic, researchers has noted that much work remains a dramatic decline.(As cited In National center for chronic Disease Prevention and health promotion, Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity, 2013)
