Future publishing hails influence of tablets | Tablet Computers | Scoop.it
Magazine publisher Future has hailed the growing influence of tablet computers on its business despite posting a drop in profits. The Bath-based group, best known for titles such as gadget mag T3, Guitar World and a stack of gaming magazines including the Official Xbox, has invested heavily in new iPad-friendly versions of its publications. Chief executive Stevie Spring said digital activities were profitable for the first time in the first half of its financial year and added tablet computers created a “truly hospitable” environment.

For tablets to succeed mainstream: Consumers simply must “get it” | ZDNet

Invariably, the reaction people have to the iPad is very different from that with other tablets. Apple has designed the iPad and its interface to be totally without intimidation. The iPad in use follows through with the marketing message that Apple gives: you just do things with it. No computing metaphors, no talk of all the different email services it can access. You will never hear the word “tablet” in an iPad ad. You just do things with it, and consumers “get it”. Every time I’ve handed an iPad to someone they start touching icons and swiping the screen, and in seconds they are doing things with it, and totally ignoring everything around them.

"RIM's obsession with security comes at a cost. It's one reason developers make fewer apps for its devices, for instance. But it also carries one major advantage. Unlike almost every other tablet developer, RIM has a ready-made audience for the PlayBook: corporate IT departments.

Tablet sales poised for spectacular growth, claims Gartner | Technology | The Guardian | Tablet Computers | Scoop.it
The iPad will dominate the nascent tablet market for the foreseeable future, the research firm forecasts, selling about 48m this year, a near-fourfold increase on 2010, to control about 69% of the market in 2011. But rivals continue to chip away at its position. Over the next four years the iPad's share is expected to fall to 47%, in a market selling 294m annually, as tablets running Google's Android operating system, HP's WebOS and RIM's PlayBook join the competition.

Sky News launches iPad app, and a huge investment in tablet-based TV news

Sky News launches iPad app, and a huge investment in tablet-based TV news | Tablet Computers | Scoop.it
The investment that’s gone into this app shouldn’t be underestimated. Developed over the past year by an in-house team at Sky News’ parent company BSkyB, the app has a dedicated team of fifteen staff that work to keep it updated with content using a custom-built content management system.

Given that the iPad must still represent a tiny proportion of the channel’s overall audience, this app, its custom-built CMS and its dedicated staff team are a significant bet on the future tablet market. A version for Android tablets is planned, with no definite release date.

BlackBerry PlayBook is perfect tablet for two kinds of people | ZDNet | Tablet Computers | Scoop.it
The BlackBerry PlayBook is the perfect choice for two types of tablet buyers — 1.) BlackBerry loyalists who want the perfect compliment to their smartphone and 2.) people who want a tablet primarily for mobile Web browsing from the conference room, couch, bedroom, and other places where you don’t have a full PC and don’t want to whip out a laptop.

For high security enterprises and government organizations that are already committed to the BlackBerry platform and have employees clamoring for iPads, the BlackBerry PlayBook is potentially an excellent tablet solution to run private apps and intranet services.

There's No Reason to Delay, CIOs Should Be Experimenting With Media Tablets in Business

"CIOs are determined not to make the same mistakes they made with smartphones, which were often written off early as expensive and frivolous toys, or executive status symbols — which then left room for more inventive leaders who saw the competitive advantage that mobile applications would bring," said David Willis, research vice president at Gartner. "They are also more willing to see that they don't need to supply and manage every device that employees use at work: Consumerization is here to stay, and moving very fast. If you can think of an application for tablets, your competition may well be thinking in the same way — and acting on it. It is time to explore the use of media tablets in business."
