8 Best Apps for English Learners and ESL Students

8 Best Apps for English Learners and ESL Students | Super Heroes of Education | Scoop.it
Looking for apps for learning English? Here are 8 of the best apps for learning English.
Jaqueline Nembhard's insight:
Apps are always a great way to teach students. Apps are appealing to students because they are like playing a video game. The eight apps I looked at were interesting and seemed beneficial. Although there was some that required you to pay there were many that were also free. I personally liked the FluentU app. It seemed like it had many levels of vocabulary words. When you chose a word it spelled out the word, used it in a sentence, it stated whether the word was a verb, noun, adjective, and demonstrated a fun picture. It also helps if the students are learning the different parts of speech.

Prepositions Of Place – English Lesson Plan (A1)

Prepositions Of Place – English Lesson Plan (A1) | Super Heroes of Education | Scoop.it
Prepositions of Place English lesson plan . In this lesson English students will learn basic prepositions of place, and basic furniture vocabulary.
Jaqueline Nembhard's insight:
As a English learner I had a hard time with prepositions of place. The idea of teaching English learners prepositions of place by using a picture of a living-room seemed ideal. The living-room is a place most if not all students should be familiar with and or use the living-room daily. The reason why I really liked this idea is because it is practical. We hear things like "pass me the remote, it is next to the living room." Or "bring me the blanket I left it on top of the couch."

Common Core in Action: 10 Visual Literacy Strategies

Common Core in Action: 10 Visual Literacy Strategies | Super Heroes of Education | Scoop.it
Edutopia blogger Todd Finley examines visual literacy through the lens of the Common Core, suggesting a wealth of visual thinking routines to help students start thinking through, about and with pictures.
Jaqueline Nembhard's insight:
I thought the second Vimeo video on introduction to VTS was interesting. What stood out to me the most was when co-author of "Visual Thinking Strategies" Philip Yenawine said that schooling rarely takes any advantage of the incredible strength that people have. I have to say that I completely agree with him. when I was watching the video they show students looking at a book and analyzing the pictures. One student mention that the characters look sad because of the way their eyes are and the shine (meaning the characters eyes are watery) and he analyzes the way their mouth is shut close. As teachers or future teachers I believe visual literacy is crucial to the way in which students learn and remember what they are learning.
