Storybird - Artful storytelling

Storybird - Artful storytelling | T.A.D. - Technology-Art-Design | Scoop.it
Love this online story creator!
Choose from a gallery of professional illustrations and write your own story to go alongside them. Free to join and teachers can set up a class account to create collaborative books. Use them to inspire creative writing or to display existing pieces such as poems or prayers. Couple of good ideas on display include one where the teacher has chosen all the pictures and then each child gets one page to write a diary entry from the perspective of one of the characters in the illustration. In another the teacher chooses the first image, the first child writes the first page and then chooses the image for the next page where child 2 will write and so on.

Completed books can be published on line and users are actively involved in reviewing each other's books. Completed books can also be embedded into websites, blogs, learning platforms etc. for free. Small charge to get a printable and PDF version and then more expensive options of soft and hard back books but possibly worth it for say an anthology of pupils work.

Minor gripe: Does use Flash so won't display finished items on iPads but can create and edit on one.

Even Better If... A few staff I have shown this to wanted to be able to upload their own pics and whilst this would be good there are alternative ways of doing this. Part of the appeal here is the illustrations and not really knowing where they will take your story.

Triptych is a great free tool for using in the classroom. Has lots of mini activities such a random selectors, spinners, quiz tools etc. to use to make leaning more engaging. Has been around a while but continues to be improved and added to. Check out their blog for ideas on using the tools.
Requires downloading to desktop. For a freebie it's fantastic.
