Actually it's a very dangerous substance. Watched a documentary on palm oil and its impact on food in France. There was a grad student in chemistry who decided to run an experiment and wrote a blog on all the items in the supermarkets and in food supply which contain palm oil: http://vivresanshuiledepalme.blogspot.sg/ (only problem is it's in French - can try translating it). In fact some food manufacturers in France now state on their products 'Free from palm oil'. What is scary too is the high palm oil content in Nutella. Many parents in France are switching to chocolate spreads which are organic and do not contain palm oil.
Elodie Sng's comment, June 30, 2013 5:33 AM
Indonesian small-scale farm workers who work on palm oil plantations are exposed daily to the chemicals which are sprayed on the trees. These are banned pesticides but they are given incentives like free motorcycles and lotteries to boost the use. These chemicals end up in the soil and pollute the water table causing people who bathed in a river nearby to have many health problems (same documentary).
