Majority of Americans believe Climate Change is worsening extreme weather | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

According to a new poll, 74 percent of Americans agree that climate change is impacting weather in the U.S., including 73 percent who agreed, strongly or somewhat, that climate change had exacerbated record high temperatures over the summer. The findings mean that a large majority of Americans agree with climatologists who in recent years have found increasingly strong evidence that climate change has both increased and worsened extreme weather events. In the poll the majority of Americans say climate change likely worsened a number of recent extreme weather events, including 71 percent for the current drought and last year's unusually mild winter; 70 percent for this year's heatwave-rocked spring; and 64 percent for the derecho, an especially fierce and long-lasting windstorm, that hit the northeast in June.

Global Pollution and Prevention News: Emission Mapping

Global Pollution and Prevention News: Emission Mapping | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

Where do air emissions come from? Obviously there are many sources but figuring out what and where requires organization of the data such as by mapping. Arizona State University researchers have developed a new software system capable of estimating greenhouse gas emissions across entire urban landscapes, all the way down to roads and individual buildings. Until now, scientists quantified carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at a much broader level. Dubbed Hestia after the Greek goddess of the hearth and home, researchers presented the new system in an article published Oct. 9 in Environmental Science and Technology. Hestia combines extensive public database data-mining with traffic simulation and building-by-building energy-consumption modeling. Its high-resolution maps clearly identify CO2 emission sources in a way that policymakers can utilize and the public can understand.

Sustainability key for ‘international competitiveness’

Sustainability key for ‘international competitiveness’ | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

British businesses need to be more sustainable if they want to be “internationally competitive”.
That’s the view of James Close, a partner at Ernst & Young, who told ELN firms in the UK should look at energy sources with lower costs to be able to compete at an international level.
He stressed sustainability isn’t just a corporate social responsibility issue but actually gives a positive return on investment. He suggested there is opportunity in both the UK and international market and companies should “find lower cost sources of energy and get down the technology curb very, very quickly by accelerating demand for those technologies”.
Mr Close added: “You really need to think about this if you want to be internationally competitive. You’ve got to have a low cost source of energy and a secure supply of energy because your international competitors are starting to do this sort of thing. And they’re thinking really creatively and laterally about how they secure energy and they’ve got some great projects as well. I think in the UK we can compete with them and lock ourselves into more productive and lower cost bases which will enable us to compete internationally.”

España / Gemasolar, 365 días suministrando energía limpia | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

Ecoticias 9/10/2012

Leyteire Square, Bordeaux University: Creating an engaging urban space for the campus + community

Leyteire Square, Bordeaux University: Creating an engaging urban space for the campus + community | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it
The historical centre of Bordeaux University sets a new beginning : the Opération Campus begins with urban design at its heart.

These spaces are currently closed, intended solely for receiving deliveries, however the project intends to turn them into a lively heart of the University, where activites and interaction can take place, through a central green space.

This series of courtyards becomes a network of interactive spaces, as well as a part of the city : a number of facilities animate the center of the square (museum, café , amphitheaters) and contribute to its urban value. The addition of planted elements lends a human scale to the existing hardscape by providing shade, delineating paths, and acting to filter air, sound, and light that enters the space. This, in turn, combats the Urban Heat Island Effect, providing more pleasant interior spaces during the hot summer months.

In plan, a certain hierarchy is established between the wide-open center, and more intimate spaces along the space’s edges. This variety of spaces invites a wide range of activities common for a university campus, from eating lunch in the sun, to meeting with colleagues and professors, to hosting celebrations and festivals...

Designed by Dinkoff Architects and Engineers, Rock-Sette is a self-sufficient and non-polluting disaster prevention and education center for Istanbul, Turkey. The project draws in water from the creek on the south side, purifies it, and stores it in a series of ponds. The cool air from these ponds is brought indoors to cool the interior naturally via diffusers in the floor plates and walls. Additionally, a set of solar panels on the south-facing roof are able to satisfy all the facility’s electrical power needs.

How No-Flush Toilets Can Help Make a Healthier World by Cheryl Colopy

How No-Flush Toilets Can Help Make a Healthier World by Cheryl Colopy | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it
Inadequate sewage systems and the lack of toilets in much of the developing world have created a major public health and environmental crisis. Now various innovators are promoting new kinds of toilets and technologies that use little or no water and recycle the waste.
by cheryl colopy

My apartment in Kathmandu, where I lived for five years, had a toilet that looked very much like the one in my house in California. Nicer even; it was pastel porcelain and had dual flush.

But although flush toilets in Nepal and the rest of South Asia may work quite well, sewer systems have not kept pace. My toilet and all the others in my Kathmandu neighborhood were connected to pipes that carried the contents of toilets away from our residences and straight into a small river a half-mile away. Stray dogs lapped the water and children played nearby.

Multi-million pound Scottish fund for renewables | Energy Live News

Multi-million pound Scottish fund for renewables | Energy Live News | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

The Scottish Government has launched a £103 million fund which will target private investments towards renewable energy.
Speaking at the Scottish Low Carbon Investment conference, First Minister Alex Salmond said the Renewable Energy Investment Fund (REIF) is open to investors who are seeking finance apart from the UK’s Green Investment Bank (GIB).
The GIB will provide financial help to increase private sector investment for green businesses when it opens next year.
The REIF is aimed to help develop renewable technologies which are advanced but have a significant funding gap such as marine energy and renewable heat.
Officially opening the multi-million pound fund yesterday, Mr Salmond also confirmed plans for an advisory group to support those seeking finance from the UK Green Investment Bank, headquartered in Edinburgh.
He said: “The planned advisory group will provide expert advice for people who have good ideas and projects to put to the Green Investment Bank but who need a helping hand to make them ready for investment. The group will help those people to refine and pitch their proposals – by doing so, it should enable the Green Investment Bank to make decisions quickly and to start investing in projects which will deliver real benefits.”

Two Sustainable Homes in Luque: In harmony with the environment...

Two Sustainable Homes in Luque: In harmony with the environment... | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

In this project, the realization of a living space that suits the topography, the vegetation, and the tropical climate required the knowledge gained from the study of vernacular architecture. The “Culata Jovai” or “House of Confronted Rooms” is a bioclimatic solution to incorporating traditional ways of living harmoniously with the environment in Paraguay. It constitutes a base typology for a reinterpretation of the vernacular, according to new functional programs, needs of symbolic representation and new technologies, framed in a sustainable project.

With the inclusion of green roof, the original space of vegetation displaced by the construction was recovered, also reducing the heat gain due to the thermal inertia of the underground spaces, therefore reducing greatly the conventional energy consumption of homes.
