Reflections on the Right to Water as We Move Towards Rio+20

Reflections on the Right to Water as We Move Towards Rio+20 | sustainable tourism development | Scoop.it

It was less than two years ago, in the summer of 2010, that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution recognizing water as a human right. This was followed by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UN HRC) adopting a resolution on “human rights and access to safe drinking water and sanitation,” which made these rights legally binding. The recognition of the right to water at these U.N. bodies, and the developments since, such as the appointment of a Special Rapporteur on right to water and the resolution by the World Health Assembly recognizing right to water, have helped place water rights on the global agenda.

It is amazing the lack of awareness of sustainability amongst youngsters!

It is amazing the lack of awareness of sustainability amongst youngsters! | sustainable tourism development | Scoop.it

As a lecturer at a higher institute of education, I found it quite disturbing how little the youth know about the world crisis we are in.  When I asked questions about the topic, most of them admitted to not knowing much.  Some even admitted to throwing rubbish out of their car whilst driving, leaving plastic bags/wrappings on the ground, and general littering.  Most of them had no idea about the fact that we are running out fuel - but all knew about Earth Hour, yet didn't know what it was for!!!

Although I teach the subject Sustainable Development, I go further than what the text book asks, as I believe it is vital to teach them about their every day life, and show them how they can make small changes.  When they hear about this, their faces glow, as they realise they make a change to help save our precious earth.

Are there any other lecturers that come across this?  What do you do to help create that awareness?  What tools do you use?  I would appreciate any suggestions as it is vital that we show the youth so that they can pass this on to their children one day!
