What’s Wrong With a Car-Centric System? New Video Explains It All | Streetsblog.net | Sustainable Futures | Scoop.it

We’re a little bit enamored with this video, produced by the Mexican office of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy and brought to our attention by Copenhagenize.

It’s less than four minutes long, yet it effectively and simply explains many of the most important concepts in transportation policy, including three of my personal favorites: driving subsidies, induced demand and externalities.

Alternative Growth Paths for Sydney: A New Report and its Implications | Newgeography.com

Alternative Growth Paths for Sydney: A New Report and its Implications | Newgeography.com | Sustainable Futures | Scoop.it

Population growth in Australia is double the world average and the New South Wales Department of Planning has projected that the population of the Sydney region will increase by 57,000 people annually. How will these extra people be housed? The NSW Government follows the usual doctrines based on higher population densities. Its planning policy, known as The Metropolitan Strategy, works on locating some 70% of new dwellings within existing urban communities (in-fill) and 30% in new greenfield sites.

Living at the whim of the weather

Living at the whim of the weather | Sustainable Futures | Scoop.it

Today, April 11, 2012, the weather forecasters are calling for widespread freezing tonight and possibly sleet and snow here in northern Ohio. A month ago, when it should have been snowing, the temperature was around 80 and garden fools actually did some planting, even corn. In a neighbor’s garden the peas are up. They are yellow this morning because the temperature recently was below freezing three nights in a row. So while liberals had a grand time tee-heeing conservatives in March about being in denial over global warming, today the conservatives can tee-hee right back and the liberals have to eat crow or maybe snow.

Greenversations » What Do Pollution Prevention, Business Profitability And Green Jobs Have In Common?

Greenversations » What Do Pollution Prevention, Business Profitability And Green Jobs Have In Common? | Sustainable Futures | Scoop.it

Under the Pollution Prevention Program, we issue grants through our regions to organizations which then use those dollars to put P2 activities in motion. Tim was a beneficiary of one of those grants through the 2011 Southwest Ohio Intern Program funded by our EPA Chicago office. To me, Tim’s story represents the People part of sustainability because he made the best of this opportunity. Tim, who is graduating from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in June, was assigned as an intern to a manufacturing facility in Southwest Ohio. This facility had recently undergone assessments which created for them many opportunities that when implemented would increase their profitability. Tim was asked by the facilities engineering manager at this company to help him implement these key P2 opportunities. In the short time that Tim was there, he helped save the company over $140,000.00 annually – that’s money saved every year, folks. And, his efforts helped set the stage for further improvements by this company as it waved Tim farewell and looked ahead for further environmental and business improvements on its personal sustainability journey.

Guided by Gaia

Guided by Gaia | Sustainable Futures | Scoop.it

When I first heard of the Gaia Hypothesis in the 1990s, as formulated by chemist James Lovelock and microbiologist Lynn Margulis, I was skeptical but respectful of the idea. I didn't rule it out. But neither did I feel confident that the Earth is a living single organism. Perhaps I was too caught up in scientific reductionism, and needed to have proof -- such as to sit down with Gaia herself. So I took note of the notion and kept on trying to save and heal Earth.
