Top 10 U.S. cities for green meetings in 2014

Top 10 U.S. cities for green meetings in 2014 | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

A few years ago, the meetings and events industry confronted a hard truth. The EPA deemed it the second most-wasteful sector in the U.S. — following only building and construction — due to the massive environmental footprint of air travel, audiovisual equipment, food waste and more.

Yet since the EPA verdict, the industry has made significant strides to clean up its act. Several leading convention centers and hotels now tout LEED or other green-building certification, and recycling, composting, green roofs and other eco-measures are increasingly the norm.

From Portland to New York City, these destinations make sustainability critical to meeting operations.

The sustainable business circuit is becoming a jargon-filled parody.

As an avid Twitter user (@bmay), I follow trends in sustainability with interest, and tune in to the daily green business chatter that pervades my timeline. Much of it is hugely valuable as a source of news. But increasingly, I find myself tuning back out of much of the discussion due to the sheer volume of meaningless jargon that is proliferating the social media sphere. Insofar as I can make it out, the sustainability business community is now striving for something that could be amalgamated as this:

Net Positive Futuristic Collaboratively Consumptive Crowd-Sourced Natural Capitalist Disruptively Innovative Systems Game-Changing Business Radicalism

Shambala Festival | The CSPA

Shambala Festival | The CSPA | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

Set in a picturesque country park in Northamptonshire, the environment has always been central to the ethos of Shambala Festival.  The event is now firmly established as a focus for innovation in sustainable technologies and the more elusive “science” of drawing people into a deeper dialogue about the environmental sustainability issues confronting us all today.

For these reasons, Shambala was the first organisation ever to achieve a 3 star Industry Green certification from Julie’s Bicycle in 2010, and has most recently been awarded a 3 star IG certification for the 2013 festival too. In fact, the festival has scooped three 3 star Industry Green certifications over the last four years!

Sustainable Event Alliance's insight:

Good luck to Shambala in this year's European Festival Awards to be announced on 15th Jan.

Public Placemaking and Art Festivals in Accra | Sustainable Cities ... | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

“In Ghana, what attracts people to places isn’t the [physical] space, it’s the event,” a friend said to me in conversation a few weeks ago.

I was reminded of his words this past weekend, standing at the triangle-shaped Otublohum Square in Jamestown. As I watched, bike stuntmen paraded up and down High Street, doing tricks on their bikes while the rapt audience — residents young and old, expats and visitors from throughout Accra who cheered, their eyes glued to the spectacle. This was the third annual Chale Wote Street Art Festival.
