#Sustainability
Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In ecology the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. For humans, sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which has ecological, economic, political and cultural dimensions. Not too much good news for Canada’s cleantech sector

News, information, analysis of renewable energy (solar, wind, biomass, tidal) , climate change, energy storage, energy efficiency, cleantech innovation and government policy posted daily.
Organic Social Media's insight:

In short, Canada’s clean-technology industry is awash in red ink. Its firms, and the know-how and intellectual property (IP) they hold, are vulnerable to foreign takeovers. Despite unprecedented interest and engagement from provincial and federal governments, Canada’s low-carbon Renaissance is very much on the ropes. The sector needs smart new policy from the public sector and engagement from Bay Street to build markets for low-carbon solutions, unlock private finance, and secure the prosperity that should accrue from investment in low-carbon innovation,

No, a coal phase-out will not cause your electricity bill to triple. And here’s why | #Sustainability | Scoop.it
I’ve already pointed out — twice — that the president of the Canadian Coal Association and recent PC cabinet minister, Robin Campbell, is lying to you when he says the coal phase-out “triple” your power bill. Unfortunately, there are still unabashed commentators failing to grasp the depth of this misinformation.

A Quantitative Review of Urban Ecosystem Service Assessments: Concepts, Models, and Implementation

A Quantitative Review of Urban Ecosystem Service Assessments: Concepts, Models, and Implementation | #Sustainability | Scoop.it
Although a number of comprehensive reviews have examined global ecosystem services (ES), few have focused on studies that assess urban ecosystem services (UES). Given that more than half of the world’s population lives in cities, understanding the dualism of the provision of and need for UES is of critical importance. Which UES are the focus of research, and what types of urban land use are examined? Are models or decision support systems used to assess the provision of UES? Are trade-offs considered? Do studies of UES engage stakeholders? To address these questions, we analyzed 217 papers derived from an ISI Web of Knowledge search using a set of standardized criteria. The results indicate that most UES studies have been undertaken in Europe, North America, and China, at city scale. Assessment methods involve bio-physical models, Geographical Information Systems, and valuation, but few study findings have been implemented as land use policy.

The Case of the Vanishing Site C Video

The Case of the Vanishing Site C Video | #Sustainability | Scoop.it
Last week DeSmog Canada published a video about the Site C dam on Facebook that — after generating nearly 120,000 views in 36 hours — was suddenly removed due to a complaint lodged by True North Entertainment, a B.C. government contractor. The video, Cutting Through the Spin on the Site C Dam, featured an interview with Harry Swain, chair of the provincial-federal panel responsible for reviewing the controversial hydro dam. Swain, a high-profile critic of Site C, explained why he thinks it’s a mistake to build the dam and how the B.C. government has changed its story over the years to justify the $9-billion project, the most expensive public infrastructure project in the province’s history. The five-minute video featured footage almost exclusively filmed by DeSmog Canada but also included some small selections of b-roll footage from the Province of B.C.’s YouTube page.
