Sustainability: More than Just Being ‘Green’

Sustainability: More than Just Being ‘Green’ | Sustainability Branding | Scoop.it

For companies aspiring to help drive solutions to our global environmental challenges, being a trusted and trust-worthy corporate citizen is prerequisite. Links between and among reputation, business success, and sustainability are key in the era of social media, and unethical behaviour can cost. The best and really only way to ensure ethical behavior within a business is to institutionalize it – establishing a culture of “self-governance” through inspiration and leadership.

The Future Of Composting: Turning Food Waste Into Fuel And Plastic

According to researcher at the American Chemical Society annual meeting and expo in Philadelphia, the process would take food waste and turn it into something useful. Lin and her colleagues at the Hong Kong City College had previously worked on reuse strategies for food from the school’s cafeteria. Now, they are teaming up with Starbucks Hong Kong and a nonprofit organization called The Climate Group to set their sights on a larger target: the 1.3 billion pounds of food dumped into landfills or otherwise wasted each year.

Sustainability Reporting & GRI Focal Point USA: One Year Later

Sustainability Reporting & GRI Focal Point USA: One Year Later | Sustainability Branding | Scoop.it

By Hank Boerner

Focusing on the huge market we usually refer to as "Corporate America," the folks who run nonprofit Global Reporting Initiative [GRI] in Amsterdam organized a concentrated effort to encourage more U.S. companies to adopt the GRI G3 framework for their sustainability reporting.

Focal Point USA officially opened for business in New York City early in 2011 with great fanfare -- including a hosted reception and bell-ringing exercise at the New York Stock Exchange. From 2010 to 2011, the number of U.S. sustainability reports including a GRI content index has grown almost 50 percent. In 2011 alone, 345 reports were published, of which 273 used the GRI framework, according to our research. And the number is growing as we continue to find more reports to add to the total.

Jeff Bezos's Top 10 Leadership Lessons - Forbes

Jeff Bezos's Top 10 Leadership Lessons - Forbes | Sustainability Branding | Scoop.it

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is tech’s leading philosopher-CEO. He was recently featured in a cover story in Forbes, and George Anders summarizes his key leadership lessons. This is great stuff:

“There are two kinds of companies: those that try to charge more and those that work to charge less. We will be the second.”

“In the old world, you devoted 30% of your time to building a great service and 70% of your time to shouting about it. In the new world, that inverts.”

All The Places In The World That Are Running Out Of Water [MAP]

All The Places In The World That Are Running Out Of Water [MAP] | Sustainability Branding | Scoop.it

About 1.7 billion people rely on aquifers that are rapidly being depleted and would take thousands of years to refill, according to a new study in the journal Nature.
The report, "Water balance of global aquifers revealed by groundwater footprint," identifies aquifers in the U.S., Mexico, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, India and China as crisis zones where groundwater resources and/or groundwater-dependent ecosystems are under threat because the use of water vastly exceeds the rate at which aquifers are being refilled by rain.

Is Buying a Prius Really Good for the Planet? - Environment - GOOD | Sustainability Branding | Scoop.it

In his book, The Conundrum, New Yorker staff writer David Owen ruffles the feathers of energy-efficiency advocates with his argument that living sustainably often means living, in his words, “pretty much the way I live right now, though maybe with a different car.” He argues that no matter how many Priuses, LED bulbs, and vegetarian entrees we buy, we won’t save the planet, because we’ll negate the energy (and money) savings by spending them on some other energy-sucking activity.
