Create Award-Winning Undergraduate Programs: Lessons from McGill University

Sntegrating sustainability into management curricula is a complex endeavor. Sustainability is rooted in systems thinking, which crosses disciplinary boundaries. The Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University engaged with this complexity to create two new Managing for Sustainability programs – a Major and a Concentration – at the undergraduate level for Bachelor of Commerce students.

Faculty members from across the globe came together in summer 2013 for a series of interactive webinars on effective ways to teach sustainability in different disciplines: finance/accounting, marketing, operations and strategy.

Each webinar began with award-winning instructors describing specific techniques they’ve used: e.g. cases, client projects and other assignments. Participants then asked questions and shared their own strategies for teaching sustainability.
