34 Stats to Help You Plan Your Social Media Strategy on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & More | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Discover 34 eye-opening statistics that will help you plan the direction of your social media strategy on Facebook, LinkedIn, and more.
donhornsby's insight:
From usage numbers to engagement statistics, it was incredible to see just how impactful networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become. For example, not only is Facebook home to 1.23 billion daily active users on average, but those users come from all over the world -- with 85.2% residing outside of the U.S. and Canada. That's a crazy level of connectivity. As I put together the post, it became obvious just how fast these networks were growing -- and I thought a lot about how hard is it to keep up with all of these changes, especially for marketers. To make things a little easier to wrap your head around, I put together a simplified list of some standout statistics for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instragram, and Pinterest. Check them out below if you're looking for some guidance for your social media strategy this year.

Twitter Is Adding New Filtering Tools in an Effort to Curb Abuse | #SocialMedia

Twitter Is Adding New Filtering Tools in an Effort to Curb Abuse | #SocialMedia | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

Twitter hopes to curb harassment once and for all by giving users the ability to filter keywords and hashtags...

OVER THE NEXT few days, Twitter will add new features intended to help curb abuse on the platform. Users will be able filter out certain keywords, phrases, user names, and hashtags in their mentions, Twitter says. You’ll also have the option to mute threads. The company is also revamping its abuse reporting system so that bystanders can report harassment and hate speech directly rather than leaving that option solely to the person on the receiving end.

And it’s about time.

Longer Tweets Are Here: All You Need to Know About Twitter's 140 Character Update | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

Twitter has just made a big change to the way tweets work.

Via Jeff Domansky
donhornsby's insight:
Twitter has just made a big change to the way tweets work. From today, Twitter is cutting back on what types of content will use up its 140-character limit. Now, @names in replies, media attachments (like photos, GIFs, videos, and polls) and quoted Tweets will no longer be counted against the valuable 140 characters that make up a tweet. This allows for richer public conversations that are easier to follow on Twitter and ensures people can attach media to tweets without sacrificing the characters they have to express themselves. Twitter first announced this update back in May but didn’t quite confirm a date when these changes would reach Twitter’s 300m+ users. However, today the company confirmed the update has been rolled out.

Twitter to Stop Counting Photos and Links in 140-Character Limit | #SocialMedia

Twitter to Stop Counting Photos and Links in 140-Character Limit | #SocialMedia  | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Twitter Inc. is making a major shift in how it counts characters in Tweets, giving users more freedom to compose longer messages.

The social media company will soon stop counting photos and links as part of its 140-character limit for messages, according to a person familiar with the matter. The change could happen in the next two weeks, said the person who asked not to be named because the decision isn’t yet public. Links currently take up 23 characters, even after Twitter automatically shortens them. The company declined to comment.

It’s a step in a larger plan to give users more flexibility on the site. Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey said in January that the company was looking for new ways to display text on Twitter, and would experiment based on how people use the service. For example, some people tweet screenshots of longer text in articles, or send many tweets one after the other to tell a story.

Twitter’s 140-character limit was originally adopted because it was a way to send Tweets while fitting all the information within a mobile text message -- a common way for sending Tweets when the service debuted in 2006, before the proliferation of smartphones.

Via Gust MEES
donhornsby's insight:
The company earlier this year considered raising the limit to as many as 10,000 characters. But the quick, concise nature of Tweets has helped set the site apart from the competition. Executives have spent the last few months emphasizing how Twitter is a destination for live events and discussion. Removing the character requirement for links and photos may encourage users to add more media to their posts.

How to Use Twitter To Check Out Your Competition | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

Twitter is one of the most popular social networks for business – it gives you advantages that aren’t available on other platforms. Since so much Twitter data is open to the public, your brand can easily use this data to learn about your competitor’s followers and strategies. Most people will use the tactic of following everyone that follows their competition. You will get roughly 30% of those users following you back. However, this will become ineffective over time.

Twitter to Test Doubling Tweet Length to 280 Characters | #ICT #SocialMedia

Twitter to Test Doubling Tweet Length to 280 Characters | #ICT #SocialMedia | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
SAN FRANCISCO — Twitter’s defining attribute has long been its brevity: 140 characters in a post and no more.

That is now set to change. Twitter said on Tuesday that it would test extending the text limit of a post on its service to 280 characters. (In effect, that would double the length of the first two sentences of this paragraph; those sentences, for the record, add up to 140 characters.)

Twitter said the goal was to eliminate what it views as constraints that keep people from tweeting more frequently. One significant barrier, according to Twitter’s internal research, has been the stringent limit on character count.

“When people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people tweeting,” Twitter said in a blog post.

It is a significant moment for the 11-year-old Twitter, which has been trying to figure out how to change the social media service without alienating the people who have embraced its short format.

The idea of extending the length of Twitter posts has been contentious internally, batted around among product groups that are trying to find ways to persuade people to use the service more frequently. At 328 million users, Twitter has been criticized for its inability to attract more people. Investors have grown nervous, as that slowing of user growth has affected the company’s revenue.

The Types of Twitter Images Marketers Love the Most

The Types of Twitter Images Marketers Love the Most | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

The stats don’t lie – if you want to share better tweets, you need to think visually.

Images score your tweets more clicks, favorites, and retweets, so it’s no surprise that 55% of all tweets sent by brands include them.

But just like you get writer’s block when you’re trying to outline your next blog post, you might get creatively blocked when you’re trying to think of an image to attach to a tweet.

Everybody gets a little stuck sometimes. Not sure what kind of visual would go best with your next tweet? One of these classics is sure to do the trick....

Via Jeff Domansky
donhornsby's insight:
Twitter is literally made for sharing soundbite-sized thoughts, making it just about the perfect venue for quotes. They’re super-shareable, which can help you reach tons of new fans in a short period of time, and since they so rarely become outdated, you can put together a list in one sitting and then share them in a trickle over time. Putting your quote of choice on an image makes it more noticeable (and, statistically, more shareable), it gives you the freedom of not adhering to the 140-character rule, and it allows you to add your own commentary. The image doesn’t even have to be particularly bold – all you really need is an attractive typeface, and you’re done.

However, stick to what is working well for your business as you dip your toes into new social networks and features. Guru’s will tell you to take a chance and jump all in; however, until you have the data and confidence to know that a social network or feature makes sense for your business, it is not responsible to go “all in.” More often than not, that shiny new object will be a disappointment and cost your business time and money. Why You Should Tweet 20+ Times Per Day – Case Study | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
The amount of times you Tweet per day can greatly affect your growth on twitter. Here'
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): Twitter is not like Facebook or Instagram. While Twitter has now implemented its version of an algorithm, it is very different from that of the Facebook algorithm. The fact remains that after ten minutes of publishing your tweet, few people will ever see the tweet. Therefore, you need to consistently tweet throughout the day. I suggest 15+ times per day, including retweets and replies. Most of my clients tweet 30+ times per day. Does that seem like too much? I assure you that it is not. If you don’t tweet 15+ times per day, you’ll limit your engagement, reach, follower growth and other measurable goals such as website and link clicks.
