Good example of a supermarket providing incentives (price reduction) to improve access to fruits and vegetables. This is a pilot program, but wouldn't it be great if supermarkets around the country saw encouragement of healthy eating as part of their mission, and provided programs such as this? I like the aspect of encouraging healthy snacks in programs where kids can encourage each other to eat well (otherwise known as peer pressure!).

Food Hubs: Solving Local - a new publication - Small Farms

University of Illinois Extension writes about a new report on food hubs, developed by the Wallace Center. From the article: "The report shows how wholesalers can partner with food hubs on programs to pull consistent volumes of safe, locally sourced food products through the supply chain," explains John Fisk, director of Wallace Center at Winrock International.

The Institute for a Sustainable future (ISF) released a report "20% by 2020 Local Food Purchasing Toolkit." This report includes the first regional directory of producers supplying institutions and restaurants in the Western Lake Superior Region, and strategies for restaurants and institutions to inform consumers, through marketing, about their commitment to local foods.

Farm to Hospital: The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) has just done an assessment of 'the current and potential health food markets for North Central region sustainable farmers.' That's a logical step, but hard to implement due to contractual and financial issues at hospitals. IATP has put together some resources to help make farm to hospital a reality.
