Last year, the top 15 ports recorded a growth of 4.2%. In 2015 the top 15 ports saw a small traffic decline of 1.6% compared to 2014. In 2016 they recorded a modest growth of 2.1%. The year 2017 brought a double digit growth for Barcelona, Genoa, Le Havre, Rotterdam, Piraeus and Sines, while Mediterranean transhipment hubs Gioia Tauro and Algeciras saw a sharp decline in box volumes.

Its combination of humor and humility looks likely to turn a failure into a win by harnessing lots of free press and potentially spiking demand. For supply chain people the takeaway should be that customers, however demanding they are, can be co-opted with honesty and a degree of direct engagement. Apple has long tapped this resource to make money with its supply chain. The lesson is that marketing could be one of your best allies.
