WATSONVILLE - A steady stream of young readers poured into Watsonville Public Library's downtown branch Monday, the first day of the first week of summer vacation for most Pajaro Valley children. Sure, they were looking forward to days spent playing video games, bike riding, splashing in the waves of Monterey Bay or just hanging out with friends.

Billy Barnes was 11 years old when he borrowed "Penrod" from the Weatherford Library on April 7, 1942. Now 81, Bill Barnes finally returned the yellowed volume that has quite a story with it.
