Students’ perception of blended learning environment - About Education Degrees | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

The increasing utilization of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in addressing various societal needs has catalysed the need to deploy this all important tools in education in developing countries to address the need of the increasing student enrolment in universities. This study was conducted to assess students’ perception of blended learning environment. The blended learning environment was designed on a Moodle platform using an adaptation of the practical enquiry model. This intervention was designed to ensure that the benefits of both online and face-to-face learning environment were harnessed for the achievement of set pedagogical goals.

Many examinations and activities place emphasis on skills like remembering and understanding. Unfortunately, this leaves little room for incorporating the Bloom’s taxonomic levels of higher order thinking like analysis, evaluation, and creativity. We know from research that teaching our students higher-order thinking skills is one of the most beneficial steps we can take. After all, these are the skills they truly need to succeed beyond school, after all. But do our examinations and activities reflect this need? To help you find out, educator Andrew Churches has devised two very useful Bloom’s analysis tools that are available on his website Edorigami. These two tools specifically analyze the Bloom’s taxonomic levels of activities and assessments. Moreover, they investigate the balance between higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and lower-order thinking skills (LOTS). In doing so, they help you improve the taxonomic focus of your exams and activities or units. Download each tool by clicking on the image or the link below it.

Educators have long recognized the importance and applicability of critical reflection across a wide range of educational settings, yet in practice it remains a challenging and nebulous concept for many to firmly grasp. In education, the concept of reflection dates back to the work of John Dewey (1933), who defined it as “active, persistent and careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the grounds that support it and the further conclusion to which it tends” (p. 9). Dewey was the first to point out that experience alone does not constitute learning; instead, a conscious realization must occur for the experience to become a source of learning.

In examining the depth of reflection, Rogers (2001) made an influential and careful study and synthesis, while Peltier, Hay, and Drago (2005) put forward a way to evaluate different levels of reflective thinking, which include habitual actions, understanding, reflection, and critical reflection (refer to Weimer, 2012). Yet the void of ecologically valid classroom-based research on incorporating reflection to improve student learning has left teachers largely on their own when it comes to creating opportunities for reflection in their courses.

"Research on effective learning reveals that an awful lot of what goes on in the classroom simply doesn’t matter. There are many pointless activities that take up valuable time in the name of engagement, merely demonstrating progress as opposed to actually making progress. Often, these approaches not only have limited impact on student learning but can have a hugely detrimental impact on teacher workload and wellbeing.

There is significant evidence to suggest that teachers should prune back what they do and focus on a more streamlined approach in the classroom. So it’s less about spending hours cutting things up and putting them in envelopes, and more about creating conditions in which students can gain long-lasting knowledge that can be applied in a range of situations. The following six principles are a distillation of key research on what really matters in the classroom."

I agree that the strategy of reducing the cognitive load is not a good strategy for the gifted and talented students. I do believe that they will become bored and then become a behavioral problem within the classroom. Gifted students need a heavy cognitive load in order to challenge their learning and in order to push them to their full potential.

@Tera S. Ellis You're right- it is possible that they could become a behavior problem. That makes me think of a child in my classroom- he hasn't been identified in our TAG program; however, I will be recommending him for next year. He tends to distract others and interrupt the learning of others quite possibly because he is completed and not being challenged enough.

Ashley and Tera , thanks for your comments but you are misunderstanding the definition of cognitive load. It doesn't have any thing to do with gifted learners not being stimulated. It has to do with the amount of information any person can handle focusing on at any one time. For instance, if you are trying to do a difficult math problem while listening to a challenging jazz riff or perhaps watch a movie at the same time, the cognitive load of those tasks in combination is going to be excessive. in that situation, you would not be effective at the math problem, because you have increased the cognitive load of the task. You have not increased the difficulty level of the task, in terms of its abstractness or the level of challenge for the mind trying to figure it out, but you have made the conditions less than optimal for that mind to operate on that task.

The objective is that good teachers create an environment where each student's learning can emerge. I don't think that means they don't teach. Gert Biesta uses John Dewey in his writing argues that teaching is relational. Having a strong grasp of content, being able to deliver it, caring for one's students, etc. each go into creating the environment where learning can emerge.

"Great Teachers Don't Teach" really sums it up with the idea that real teaching doesn't take place until the student does on their own.  This article relates to my project because I believe one way teachers can learn how to let go is for them to be in the same situation as they need to let their students be and that is be left to do.  The only issue perhaps is educators may go through and experience doing, but giving up the control is hard because day in and day out you have been doing the doing. I believe learning how to let go must be accomplished by learning how to let go.  Educators must plan a lesson and say include one or two steps of letting go.  Then they must build on it, so that day after day they themselves feel comfortable with letting go.  Managing a classroom of students who must do specific things on their own looks and feels different because the students are engaged to the point that they do not want to be interrupted rather they are feverishly and committed to learning.

I was a little skeptical on this.  However, if you think about it-it makes sense.  All of this technology used for social media is impeding students from learning to critically think, collaborate, empathize-among other things.  Helping them learn to work closely with others in a school environment will help them learn to engage well with others at work and in society as a whole when they are adults.
