4 ways the Future of Learning is changing

4 ways the Future of Learning is changing | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

Higher education must adapt to the 21st century—in learning, in culture, and in developing future leaders. And it won’t look anything like the current college experience.

First a bit of background: The university system as it is known today was founded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Prior to that, there were no degrees per se, no recommended course lists or credits. The development of grading systems first started then, as well as multiple choice and standardized testing. Knowledge compartmentalization—or nonporous siloes—began, dividing subjects into disciplines and departments.

The timing of these developments is important. It all began during the Industrial Revolution, and an “industrial” approach to education was born. It made sense as it fit the culture and the time. But that era has come and gone, and yet the approach to education is still the same in many ways.

Have You Tried The Aurasma App? ~ Mrs. Wideen's Blog | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

"I went to Edcamp Detroit last weekend and Erin Klein shared a free app that she has used in her classroom with a lot of success.  The app is called Aurasma.  The app allows individuals to create and publish their own augmented reality experiences they call "Auras."  I'm sure you are thinking the same thing I was thinking when Erin was talking about this app, "Sounds cool, but what does it do?"  Students and teachers can make lessons come alive with this platform.  It is difficult to explain so I will explain it step by step, then show you what it looks like in action."

The 6 Questions We Should Be Asking about the Future of Learning

The 6 Questions We Should Be Asking about the Future of Learning | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
In the near future, we should support students and young people in experiencing what it’s like to learn in online and in person spaces, managing projects and their own work, much like how they are living their lives.

Given this reality and given our goal of preparing young people for the world we think they may inherit, what learning experiences can and should we as educators design for? What does learning look like in the modern era?

This is an important reminder that teaching is all about building a relationship with your students. In fact, in today’s world, when information is at our fingertips, we don’t need to go to school to learn facts and figures — a quick Google search, a glance at Wikipedia, or a question posed to Siri will usually result in answers to specific questions.

It is widely accepted that opportunities to work in teams lets students develop better communication, collaboration and organizational skills. Before we started using Scrum, we had not found any surefire method to make projects successful. Now we have a framework that provides more structure and guidance for teachers and students. We are providing the necessary scaffolding so students can learn harmonious teamwork. With this in place, we can embark on classroom projects that let students explore, create and shine.

[PDF] Fostering exploration and excellence in 21st century schools

[PDF] Fostering exploration and excellence in 21st century schools | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

Schools have a critical role in equipping students for the 21st century workplace, which will require a mix of soft and hard skills for success. What strategies and techniques can educators implement in the classroom to support the development of these skills?
The need for education systems to evolve along with the demands of the global economy is certain. But the question of how to implement this change at the classroom level is less clear. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) embarked on a research programme, sponsored by Google for Education, that explores the strategies that are most effective for developing 21st century skills and how technology can support such efforts.

In this report, Fostering exploration and excellence in 21st century schools, we discuss the findings of our research, which includes a global survey of 1,200 teachers and administrators from 16 countries around the world. The research programme builds upon the EIU’s 2015 study, Driving the skills agenda: Preparing students for the future, which assessed shifts in skills needs.

25 Teaching Tools To Organize, Innovate, & Manage Your Classroom - TeachThought

25 Teaching Tools To Organize, Innovate, & Manage Your Classroom - TeachThought | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Over the years, many of us have personally experienced the growth of technology in today’s classrooms.

Instead of taking notes, students are now occupied by surfing the Internet, scrolling through Facebook, and messaging their friends on their smart phones, tablets, and laptops. Instead of focusing on the instruction, teachers are constantly required to interrupt class in order to remind those students again and again, that class time is for learning, not texting. However, as today’s students are using more technological devices, it is imperative that teachers have access to the resources to keep pace with the growing tech culture.

The use of smart phones, tablets, and other tech items in the classroom do not necessarily have to have a negative impact on student achievement. On the contrary, the increasing accessibility and growth of technology presents teachers with the unique opportunity to take advantage of those once distracting gadgets, and use them to facilitate academic achievement in new and innovative ways. In this capacity, teachers do not need to be constantly fighting for student attention, but can freely accept it, by introducing a new educational environment that will automatically encourage student participation.

Below are some resources that teachers may find useful when attempting to implement technology into their classrooms, separated by 5 common areas that are increasingly important for teachers, and for an effective learning environment—Organization, Project Based Learning, Class Management, Presentations, and Assessment.

"...we are thrilled to announce the new Educating for Democracy Deep Dive developed by the Teaching Channel and the Civic Engagement Research Group at the University of California, Riverside. The Deep Dive is a curated collection of videos accompanied by educational resources, blogs, and articles related to preparing youth for civic and political life in the digital age. It provides educators with the opportunity to see key aspects of civic learning and digital media learning in action. It also provides avenues for educators and their students to explore the ways in which our civic, political, and digital lives are inextricably linked in the 21st century.

"For example, there are videos and resources that highlight various ways educators can integrate civic learning in line with the following essential questions:

-INVESTIGATION & RESEARCH: How do I help students research issues that matter to them?
-CIVIC KNOWLEDGE: How do I help further students’ civic knowledge and understanding?
-DISCUSSION: How do I help students have productive discussions about current and controversial issues?
-VOICE: How can students voice their perspective on issues that matter to them?
-ACTION: What are effective ways to take action in the digital age?
