Tacit knowledge in intercultural collaborations and the workplace: A survey | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

Professor Neil Anderson of James Cook University, Australia is currently leading a study that aims to increase the understanding of the processes involved in intercultural collaborations. In particular, the study focuses on the role of tacit (hidden) knowledge in international collaborative work. If you have been involved in intercultural collaborations, it would be greatly appreciated if you could complete the online survey at:

“Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.” Theodore Roosevelt

This is an important reminder that teaching is all about building a relationship with your students. In fact, in today’s world, when information is at our fingertips, we don’t need to go to school to learn facts and figures — a quick Google search, a glance at Wikipedia, or a question posed to Siri will usually result in answers to specific questions.

It is widely accepted that opportunities to work in teams lets students develop better communication, collaboration and organizational skills. Before we started using Scrum, we had not found any surefire method to make projects successful. Now we have a framework that provides more structure and guidance for teachers and students. We are providing the necessary scaffolding so students can learn harmonious teamwork. With this in place, we can embark on classroom projects that let students explore, create and shine.

5 Strategies to Demystify the Learning Process for Struggling Students | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

"When students do not understand how their brains learn and retain material, they can develop misconceptions about themselves as learners — such as a faulty assumption that they are bad at a subject or that they suffer from performance anxiety. Oakley shares the common experience of students who reread their notes and think they know the material —  only to enter a test and find that they cannot retrieve the information. “They are horrified and think they must have test anxiety.” More likely, says Oakley, they simply haven’t been taught how to study in a way that allows them to retrieve the information.

"Oakley recognizes that “many educators are not at all comfortable with or trained in neuroscience,” so she breaks down a few key principles that teachers can use in the classroom and share with students to help them demystify the learning process."

The Future of Education is Unstructured Learning, and Here's Why

The Future of Education is Unstructured Learning, and Here's Why | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Unstructured learning is an authentic real-world way of learning. That’s because the real world itself doesn’t have neat compartments or set disciplines for success. It demands adaptability, patience, and a willingness to learn and to use what is learned in the moment. Most of all, it requires us to take full responsibility for what we learn.

It’s time to play and to let go of rigid teaching in favour of unstructured learning. For this to happen, teachers have to foster trust in their students. They have to be willing to take a step back and put a little slack on the reins of traditional pedagogy. In short, we need to let things get a little messy. Ease into it—it’s a bold step and it will transform everything.

A nonprofit known for its annual “Horizon Reports” on the future of technology at K-12 schools, universities, and museums abruptly shut down this month after officials discovered the organization was out of money.

“The New Media Consortium (NMC) regrets to announce that because of apparent errors and omissions by its former Controller and Chief Financial Officer, the organization finds itself insolvent,” the group said in an email message sent to its members on Monday afternoon. “Consequently, NMC must cease operations immediately.”

The group, based in Austin and started in 1994, has hundreds of college and university members. It organized conferences and events, and published reports in its goal of encouraging “exploration and use of new media and technologies for learning and creative expression.” It is best known for its series of Horizon Reports, based on a research project it has been running since 2002, which had lately been done in partnership with other nonprofit groups—EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative for higher ed, and with CoSN for K-12.

The Deep Dive is a curated collection of videos accompanied by educational resources, blogs, and articles related to preparing youth for civic and political life in the digital age. It also provides avenues for educators and their students to explore the ways in which our civic, political, and digital lives are inextricably linked in the 21st century.

"For example, there are videos and resources that highlight various ways educators can integrate civic learning in line with the following essential questions:

-INVESTIGATION & RESEARCH: How do I help students research issues that matter to them?
-CIVIC KNOWLEDGE: How do I help further students’ civic knowledge and understanding?

Teaching Introverted Students: How a 'Quiet Revolution' Is Changing Classroom Practice

Teaching Introverted Students: How a 'Quiet Revolution' Is Changing Classroom Practice | Studying Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
The suspicion that they may be holding quiet and otherwise bright students to an unfair standard is driving some teachers to change their conception of class participation, which can count for up to half of a student’s overall grade in some classrooms and shape the teacher’s perception of student success. For Pawlak and Rosevear, the emphasis on teaching to personality types promoted by the New York City-based Quiet Revolution seemed like a way of clearing away some longstanding notions that were getting in the way of acknowledging, and rewarding, their quiet students’ unique contributions. Quiet Revolution is the brainchild of writer Susan Cain, whose 2012 book, Quiet: the Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking, became a bestseller, and whose talk on making the workplace more inclusive of different personality styles became a TED Talk phenomenon. Since then, Cain has set her sights on changing the classroom, where she says teachers unconsciously reward the extroverts who dive headfirst into discussions, sometimes without much forethought.
