POLI 330 Political Science Week 5 TCO Assessment Answers (2017)

    1.    (TCO 4) What are your initial, nonlegal, thoughts on this case? How would you decide it based on your own belief structures? For example, if you were the judge in this case, would you would allow Mr. Trident to leave the hospital, thus bringing about his death? Or would you feel for Mr. Trident but side with the hospital because he clearly is not in the right mind to make such decisions for himself? Or would you perhaps side with the hospital because people should not be allowed to refuse medical treatment or go to the extreme of ordering the hospital to aid in the shortening of his life so that he did not have to suffer a painful death? What would you do? Please put some thought into your answer and provide at least 4–5 sentences as you explain it.
    2.    (TCO 4) What is the difference between moral and legal reasoning?
    3.    (TCO 4) In a true legal argument, should legal reasoning or moral reasoning be used?
    4.    (TCO 4) Mr. Trident is arguing that the hospital has violated his 14th Amendment right to due process. What part of the 14th Amendment is he referring to in his argument?
    5.    (TCO 4) Cruzan v. Director, Missouri Department of Health is a case studied in the right-to-die debate. What precedent did it help to establish?
    6.    (TCO 4) How does the Cruzan case factor into Mr. Trident’s argument?
    7.    (TCO 4) Given the precedent established in the Cruzan case, how would you now have to decide the case if you were the judge?
    8.    (TCO 4) What other U.S. Supreme Court cases deal with the right-to-die issue?

Week 5 D2 NSCI362

DNR and Water Resources

State and federal agencies in the United States play a significant role in protecting and preserving the environment.  The mission statement of Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reads: “The Department of Natural Resources leads Maryland in securing a sustainable future for our environment, society, and economy by preserving, protecting, restoring, and enhancing the State’s natural resources.”

Please visit Maryland’s DNR website at http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/waters/ ; and spend a little time reviewing some of the projects and activities that the DNR is involved with, particularly those related to the protection of water resources (rivers, streams & groundwater).  Once you have done this, please describe and discuss some of the ways you think DNR is (or is not) fulfilling their mission statement to ‘secure a sustainable future for our environment.’

NSCI 362 Week 3 Discussion 1 China's population policies

Week 3 D1

China's population policies

This week we discussed population growth and briefly mentioned China’s previous strategy to control population, which was to allow a couple to have only one child (with certain exceptions granted).  This “one-child” policy, which began in 1978, was introduced to solve social, economic, and environmental problems in the country.  China estimates this policy prevented 400 million births, with the fertility rate falling from 2.63 in 1980 to 1.61 in 2009.  This policy is an important but highly controversial sustainability strategy.  Many agree that reproduction is a basic human right and consequently the mandatory population control policy is in direct contrast to the social goal of sustainable development, and it may produce detrimental unintended consequences that need to be remedied.  In 2013 China amended this policy to allow more than one child in a family if either of the parents are only children.

What are your thoughts on government controlled population growth and do you think there would ever come a point at which you would agree to population control in the US? Why or why not?

PHIL 347 Argumentative Essay (Chamberlain)

Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to examine whether animals and human rights should be equal. It will focus on human rights and animal rights, moral judgment, and elements ofexploitation. It is true that people do not see animals as superior. The animal welfare law only protects animals to a certain degree. They aren’t protected against medical experiments, as bate, and other projects. Human rights is already a difficult topic to touch on, nonetheless, animal rights. Animals have rights that should be recognized andhave a legal status that should protect them to live in their natural habitat and free from exploitation.

NSCI 362 Week 5 Discussion 1 GMOs

Week 5 D1

GMOs

There is a need to increase global food production in order to ensure food security for people in all countries.  Currently, world hunger is a significant issue - according to the Food and Agricultural Organization (of the United Nations), in the time period of 2014–2016, 795 million people in the world, just over one in nine, were undernourished (FAO 2017). Many countries with a high prevalence of undernourishment are found in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

One suggested remedy to this problem is to increase the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).  Please spend a little time researching and reading some information on GMOs on the internet.

While science and technology have long been used in agriculture, and the science of GMOs may provide significant breakthroughs in increasing crop yields, many people question whether or not they should be used.   After reading about GMOs, please discuss your views on GM crops and seeds and the foods produced from them.  What are some of the short- and long-term consequences of GM crops for the environment?
