CommonAction Consulting: Student Voice Is NOT Democracy

CommonAction Consulting: Student Voice Is NOT Democracy | Youth Voice and Leadership | Scoop.it

CommonAction Consulting is a boutique firm focused on engaging people as youth, in schools, within communities, and throughout their own lives.

Being the autocratic, adultcentric environments that they are, schools are not democracies, and school leaders and educators routinely tell students that. That pronouncement alone equates student voice to something other than democratic. When I train about it, I emphasize that when engaged accordingly, student voice can be an avenue towards efficacy in teaching, learning, and leadership in education.

Welcome to the Youth Rights Network - YRN

The Youth Rights Network is intended to serve as an encyclopedic resource detailing various aspects of youth rights, including core issues, history, publications, organizations, and prominent figures within the movement.
At the Youth Rights Network, we firmly believe information is power, and power is what young people have the least of. This website is for every young person who wants to learn more about their rights, get help in fighting for them, and participate in a community of youth working to build those resources. To get started, please check out the Help Section.
The Youth Rights Network is a community driven youth rights resource sponsored by the National Youth Rights Association and The Freechild Project.
Still in its infancy, the Youth Rights Network(YRN) is expanding fast and intends to house an extensive collection of youth rights resources, articles, and information. As a community edited wiki, YRN depends on the involvement of its visitors to ensure an expansive, accurate, and useful resource. YRN is a fluid resource, check back often as things are always changing and expanding.
Please assist us with editing and page construction if at all possible. We need your help. A good place to start is by checking out our "To-Do List", and help us as much as possible; this is a youth rights community for all to participate in constructively.

Youth Discuss the Power of Sport for Development and Peace - SOS Children's Villages Canada

Almost 30 youth from developing countries have made their way to Qatar to participate in a youth camp on how sports can promote community development and peace. Twenty-nine youth from nine sub-Saharan African countries and the occupied Palestinian territory attended a United Nations (UN) sponsored leadership camp on how sports can help their communities address social issues. The young people met at an 11-day youth camp in Doha, Qatar. Their discussions covered human rights, health, peace education, gender equality and the inclusion of persons with disabilities. Now, with the support of the camp organizers, the youth will have the opportunity to take what they’ve learned and implement the plans they drafted with their peers in their own communities. In doing so, they will make that all-important transition from youth to adulthood, from student to teacher.

Michael Loy's curator insight, October 30, 2013 12:32 PM

This article talks about how young people after leaving a youth camp are using sports to help deal with social issues and bring communities together. This is a very accurate tactic because sport is such a powerful tool to bring people together. This relates to class in how we talked about transformational leaders and how they want to make major changes just like these young people who are trying to make change in their societies with sport.

After Censorship of History Course, Colorado Students & Teachers Give a Lesson in Civil Disobedience

After Censorship of History Course, Colorado Students & Teachers Give a Lesson in Civil Disobedience | Youth Voice and Leadership | Scoop.it
After a county school board in Colorado proposed to rewrite the district’s high school U.S. history curriculum to stop teaching about civil disobedience, students and teachers have responded with acts of civil disobedience of their own. Classes have been canceled twice in Jefferson County as teachers stage mass sick-outs and students walk out of classes. At a protest last week, hundreds of Denver-area high school students held cardboard signs with slogans including, "Don’t make history a mystery

Its the young people who don't have any choice but to change the world, who will be swallowed up by the abyss of consumeristic self-interest, those are the ones I'm most interested in. Those are the ones the Left should really keep an eye on, because while they're the ones most in need of social change right now, luckily, they are the fighters who are most deeply engaged in the struggle right now.

Principles of Authentic Youth Engagement

Whenever young people say that an activity is particularly powerful or meaningful for them there is a set of conditions present. These conditions can feel difficult to pin down, especially when adults are too busy or too inexperienced to identify them. The following Principles were devised after I spent several months working with a group of youth at a public high school in New York City.
