Educational Leadership:Expecting Excellence:Excellence for All

Educational Leadership:Expecting Excellence:Excellence for All | Struggling High School Readers | Scoop.it
Founded in 1943, ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) is an educational leadership organization dedicated to advancing best practices and policies for the success of each learner.

This article looks at "where" we look and teach to--when educating children appropriately AND preparing them for the tests; Looking only at the Bottom, Looking Only at the Top, Looking only at the Middle.  A great read--with an alternative idea (in a movie, I think that's called a surprise ending).

Student Issues - I chose this resource because repeated reading & vocabulary previewing are two strategies I implemented when I taught English that I felt were extremely effective.  I hope to share this with other English teachers to hopefully improve their students reading and vocabulary comprehension.

Student issues - I chose this resource because trying to find ways to motivate struggling students can be quite difficult for teachers.  Those that struggle with reading are the ones that need to practice the most and this article provides teachers with ways to motivate their students.  I hope to share this resource with English teachers to implement in their reading lessons.

"The authors assess current reading interventions for struggling readers and offer five guidelines for choosing an effective program."  Author goes onto explain two NONNEGOTIABLE features that must be in place BEFORE any interventions will work:  "The entire school must be focused on literacy approaches to ensure that their students are engaged in meaniningful curriculum AND are already providing students with significant opportunities for wide reading."

Student issues - I chose this resource because identifying when to implement reading interventions for students is extremely important as we don't want them to fall too far behind.  We also want lessons to be engaging and include both reading and writing.  I hope to share this article with the head of our RTI program in an effort to improve our reading program.

:Narrowing Gaps for Special-Needs Students | Struggling High School Readers | Scoop.it

"A longitudinal study in Rhode Island shows that despite low rankings, many schools are raising the achievement of students with special needs."

This is a fantastic report--showing results!  "Students identified in the 9th grade as scoring 3 years behind in reading are required to take a 90-minute instructional block taught by an English teacher and a Reading Specialist.  Similar intervention classes are in place for math as well.  Great Article!

Student issues - I chose this resource because our special education teachers use a variety of resources to help narrow the gaps in their students; however, they could always use more strategies as our students are still struggling.  I hope to share this with special education teachers to give them additional ideas to help their students in reading.
