7 Habits for Projecting Confidence Instead of Arrogance

7 Habits for Projecting Confidence Instead of Arrogance | Stretching our comfort zone | Scoop.it

We all want to be more confident-it's a personal quality that helps us build strong relationships with others, get things done, and move forward in our work and life. However, sometimes we can go overboard, and our confidence can become something much darker: arrogance.

In their book, Why Leaders Fail, authors Peter Stark and Mary Kelly explain how leaders sabotage themselves-and their organizations-when they project arrogance instead of confidence. According to the authors, the defining factor of a strong leader is rooted in the relationships he or she builds with followers, and how effectively he or she propels the organization toward great achievement.

We all want to be more confident, but be careful that your confidence doesn't become something much darker.

People have been saying for quite some time now that some brains are wired for languages while others are wired for Maths and others for spatial accuracy. Noam Chomsky would definitely love this! I guess, after all, those people who talked about the left hemisphere of the brain being more for languages were correct after all! However, these wirings can be changed through training and practice!

Master the One-on-One Meeting

Master the One-on-One Meeting | Stretching our comfort zone | Scoop.it

Whether you’re a CEO or a line manager, your team is just as important as a group as its members are as individuals. Today’s tech companies offer many perks to attract and retain the best employees. We offer competitive salaries, training and the promise of success—professionally and financially. But how we treat them as individuals can determine the way their DNA will impact the fabric of your organization. What are you doing, as their manager, to make sure they are satisfied and making the best contribution to your organization?

Whether it’s an hour a week or 30 minutes once a month, making time for an individual says you give a damn about them as a person.

The 1:1 is the only forum where you can have an honest, private, conversation with each other about what’s really going on—professionally and personally.

This is a routine opportunity for you, as a manager, to assess the parts (your employees) that lead to the productive whole (your team)—which we all know is more powerful than the sum of said parts.

The one-on-one meeting between supervisor and staff is an invauable tool for managing, but requires much attention to detail.

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, August 26, 2016 4:09 AM
The one on one meetings usually take place before annual assessments of employee performance. Appraisal reports are often preceded by a one on one meeting with the employee. In many cases, misunderstandings are removed when these 1-1 meetings take place.

Try This Exercise In Radical Empathy To Minimize Conflict

Try This Exercise In Radical Empathy To Minimize Conflict | Stretching our comfort zone | Scoop.it
Tensions are running higher than usual these days.

In addition to the everyday disagreements we have with our friends, family, and coworkers, the brutal election over the last year appears to have ripped the country in two, with liberals and conservatives unable to see eye to eye. In addition to everyday arguments at the office about which marketing idea was better or how much to spend on a colleague's baby shower, those on opposite sides of the political divide feel anger, resentment, and animosity toward one another. Heated emotions are bubbling to the surface.

Spencer Greenberg, founder and CEO of Clearer Thinking, a non-partisan organization that conducts research on decision-making and creates free tools for the public, sees our current state of discord as an opportunity to learn to be more empathetic. He's been developing strategies for helping Clinton and Trump supporters to better relate to one another.

Four Doors for Busy Non-Dummies (Learning 2.0)

Four Doors for Busy Non-Dummies (Learning 2.0) | Stretching our comfort zone | Scoop.it

This is why I love the Thialgi  4 door model "Training professionals are looking for, and learners are demanding, alternatives to what has become traditional eLearning—the PowerPoint slideshow souped up with an audio component. These programs are typically very linear and do not offer much control to the learner. If you are designing training for traditional play-by-the-book learners in their 40s and 50s, this is no problem. But if you are designing for learners who grew up with Nintendo, Playstations and MySpace—the Gen Y or Millennial crowd who put the chaos in EduChaos—your audience is going to grow bored quickly."
