Create, Edit, Self-Publish and Sell Your eBook as You Write It: Leanpub - Publish Early, Publish Often

Very simple - setup Dropbox with text files and images to publish your ebook.




Robin Good: Leanpub is a free web service that allows you to create, edit and publish your own book in PDF, .epub (iPad) and .mobi (Kindle) formats, and to sell it online at your own set price.

Leanpub it's simple to use, but, in my opinion, it's not for everyone, as its setup is not as simple and straightforward (yet) as that of other web apps. But if you are a bit familiar with Dropbox, if you can easily edit text files, and don't mind tagging your book text with a few asterisks here and there, then you should be more than fine with this tool.

 

Basically Leanpub hooks up to your Dropbox account where it drops a set of simple text files that control the contents, sequence, formatting and images for your book.

 

So to work with Leanpub, you actually open a text file in your Dropbox account, and start editing it. The Leanpub account is used only to initially create the files needed in Dropbox, to generate previews and to provide you with the means to provide marketing info for your book landing page (auto-created by Leanpub).

 

It is possible to start a book by importing content from your blog RSS feed or from a Word document saved in HTML format.

 

One other cool feature of Leanpub is its ability to allow you, as an author, to publish and start selling your book at any time, giving you the option to actually get paid from the moment you publish your first edition.

 

People can sign-up to your book updates via the landing page, and Leanpub collects for you their emails so that you can keep in touch with them, and alert them everytime you have a new edition out.

 

The final cherry on the pie at Leanpub is the "bundling" feature which allows authors to bundle together either multiple books of their own, or their books together with other authors'(and their approval) ones and to offer them at a special discounted price.

 

This option by itself allows book authors both to use a very powerful marketing approach juxtaposing their titles to other relevant ones, as well as to cultivate their own competence in a specific area to curate relevant book sets for their audience. Gardner: What was discussed at the Story 3.0 gathering?

 

Bove: One topic was a project from my group called “surround vision” in which we are saying “let’s take your high-definition television set and add augmented reality to it.” What that means is you’re watching a debate, a talk show, an entertainment program, a sporting event, and it’s the same thing everybody else can see. So you’d say, “I want to see the audience’s reaction to what Jay [Leno] just said.” On “The Tonight Show” there’s always a camera pointed at the audience, but most of the time the feed doesn’t go out. What if those additional video feeds were available and all I had to do was take my iPhone and hold it up and look around behind me? Or during a debate I could look at the reactions of the other candidates to what the person at the podium just said. I would not then be relying on the producer providing the video to decide which view I ought to see. Or for a sporting event, I may want to look at the other end of the field than what they are showing right now. The field is surrounded by cameras, so video is being shot.

 

We are looking at a variety of content ranging from entertainment to sports to news and public affairs....

Robin Good: If you are interested i understanding how most people utilize and move between the use of their smartphone or tablet, to their desktops or TV screens and viceversa, this elegantly illustrated feature by Google, will definitely provide you with some new insight and some relevant data.

 

"Today 90% of our media consumption occurs in front of a screen. As consumers balance their time between smartphones, tablets, PCs and Televisions, they are learning to use these devices together to achieve their goals."

 

"...some insights from our latest research:

 

-> 90% of consumers begin a task on one device and then complete it on another device.

 

-> Smartphones are by far the most common starting point for this sequential activity.

 

-> TV no longer commands our full attention.

 

-> TV strategy should be closely aligned and integrated with the marketing strategies for digital devices.

 

In essence: "While consumers are using more than one device simultaneously, content viewed on one device can trigger specific behavior on the other.

Businesses should therefore not limit their conversion goals and calls to action to only the device where they were initially displayed."
