Why Do We Resist Change?

Why Do We Resist Change? | Strategies for Managing Your Business | Scoop.it
Because we’re deluded!

We all delude ourselves about our achievements, our status, and our contributions. We

Overestimate our contribution to a project;
Have an elevated opinion of our professional skills and standing among our peers;
Exaggerate our project’s impact on profitability by discounting real and hidden costs.
Many of our delusions come from our association with success, not failure. We get positive reinforcement from our successes and we think they are predictive of a great future.

Wow -- this post is interesting. If you are curious about interactive storytelling for your business, you definitely need to read this. Or if you are a story practitioner, you need to know the different forms of interactive storytelling.

Whichever lense you use, this is a good read.

What I like are the 3 easy-to-understand frames the author uses, and the examples included. The post is written by Patricia Aufderheide for the Center For Media & Social Impact.

It's a short piece, and I was fascinated by the breakdown of interactive storytelling. I think it will help you also. Happy reading!

6 Powerful Ways To Thank Your Team For Being Awesome

6 Powerful Ways To Thank Your Team For Being Awesome | Strategies for Managing Your Business | Scoop.it

It sounds like common sense to say thank you to those who work for you and work with you, but it in reality this common sense wisdom is not practiced as much as it should be.

Some people say they don't have time or can't afford to show appreciation; others may have good intentions but just never think of it in the moment.

But if you think of it in terms of payoff--giving you and your organization more stability and less turnover (and, as a result, greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness)--it's about investing in an important relationship.

The smart CEO’s most undervalued skill: listening

The smart CEO’s most undervalued skill: listening | Strategies for Managing Your Business | Scoop.it
We tend to think of leaders as the ones doling out advice, but what most employees really need is a skillful listener who can help them find their own way.

Felicity Hodkinson's curator insight, November 5, 2015 6:28 AM

How deeply do you listen? This article highlights the importance, but it is the 4 levels of listening from Otto Scharmer & Katrin Kaufer's book Theory U: From Ego system to Eco system that I find most helpful:

1. Downloading (habitual): projecting old judgments. Selectively hearing what re-enforces what you know.

2 Factual: directing the beam of observation onto the world

around us. Open Mind. Suspending judgement.

3. Empathic: adopting the other person’s perspective and

therefore seeing ourselves through the eyes of the other. Open Heart. Suspending beliefs.

4. Generative: listening from the whole and the emerging

new. Allowing yourself to be changed by what you hear. Open Will.

Which types of listening do you predominantly use?

What Happens In Your Brain During The Two Critical Stages Of Sleep

What Happens In Your Brain During The Two Critical Stages Of Sleep | Strategies for Managing Your Business | Scoop.it

The average person spends one-third, or 36%, of their lives sleeping. That means if you live to be 90, you spend about 32 years asleep.

"What that 32 years is telling us is sleep, at some level, is important, and yet for most of us, we don’t give sleep a second thought," says Russell Foster, a circadian neuroscientist, in his massively popular TED talk titled, "Why Do We Sleep?" "We throw it away. We just don’t think about sleep."

Since sleep and its role in our lives is still mostly a mystery, those hours we rest are, unfortunately, thought of as a waste of time in our always-on, connected world. As the famous saying goes, "money never sleeps," so those who can find a way to "cheat" sleep are accoladed for their "secret to success"—as if getting by on less sleep is accomplished through sheer determination.

We shouldn't wear lack of sleep like a badge of honour. Our brains are actually doing important work to make us more successful as we snooze.
