Scarecrows Now Outnumber People in This Dying Village

Anna Sasaki's curator insight, March 22, 2015 3:29 AM

There is a small village in southwestern Japan which is increasing in scarecrow citizens and decreasing in citizens. A resident is creating scarecrows to replace the citizens which have either died or left, and the small town is filled with 350 replacement scarecrows, which she states that "[she] will continue making as long as [she] is healthy." The scarecrows now outnumber the residents, and most notably there is a closed down school filled with scarecrow children and teachers.

The population distribution and declination is shown through this video, as the people are leaving for more populated regions of Japan for job opportunities. This is an increasing trend of leaving the rural regions of Japan for the more industrialized areas. This trend of declining population added to leaving the rural regions leads to nearly no more rural areas and less people.
