Wow! We’ve become masters of anecdotes, and terrible at telling real stories | storytelling storyselling | Scoop.it
It’s a well-documented paradox of modern relationships: Our digital tools allow us to connect in ways that feel both intimate and distant. We can be reached at all times and across great distances, but the ties that bind us are superficial. Quick updates (even the occasional humblebrag) are better than radio silence when th

As promised, here's the second post I recently found about anecdotes versus storytelling.

I found this piece quite intriguing because it points to a possible decline in storytelling in favor of sharing quick anecdotes. What I like however are the tips for how to really share a story in conversation. Great stuff!

Anecdotes have their place, but never share an anecdote when a real story is called for (and that's way more often than you think!)

Here's a fab Origin Story about the iPhone for your Friday/weekend reading.

It's a bit long, but fascinating. There's so much more to the story than you can imagine. Secrecy, drama, and surprises are all included. Plus it's a good history lesson in innovation, and really how new ideas become reality.

Enjoy this piece.

Here's a piece from Gartner that makes some good points about data storytelling.

But a lot of the author's points need a bit more clarification. I began to write a review, and it turned into a blog post. The link to the Gartner article is at the top of the post.

Here are the pieces I clarify:

  1. What data storytelling is and is not
  2. The role of data visualization
  3. The biggest mistake technology leaders make when attempting a data story
  4. How to craft a data story
  5. The second biggest mistake you'll make
  6. And the distinction between data biases and a storyteller's point of view

Read my blog and then the article so you get the whole picture. Let's whip those data stories into shape to maximize your influence and impact.

My colleague, Karthik Rajan @KarthRajan wrote this piece about being more effective at sales. I really like the questions he uses that get at the heart of sales issues.

Then I really like the analogy he uses to make his point about being yourself. And in the midst of all of this is the critical role of storytelling.

If you struggle with sales, or just want to get better at it using stories, this post will help.

When it comes to business storytelling articles, I have been very impressed with those that are being put out by Visme.   This article, for instance, surprised me with a number of visual storytelling trends that are accelerating.  Although predictive, the author, Nayomi Chibana, makes a great deal of sense.  Furthemore, what she says is worth knowing across a broad spectrum of businesses.

It includes great quotes too, like this one excerpted from something George Dyson said a few years ago.

We now live a world where information is potentially unlimited.

Information is cheap, but meaning is expensive."

Again, however, this, like so many articles on storytelling, sets off my pet peeve meter with unsubstantiated statistics.  In this case, she states that the human mind processes visual information 60,00 times faster than text and 83% of human learning is visual.

Besides not being substantiated, I can hardly believe that 83% of human learning is visual.  Furthermore, when audio and visual are used at the same time, which stimulus gets the nod?

I love this post! The author shares solid research about why most branding fails and what customers really want when they do engage with a company.

Bottom line: successful engagement (B2C + B2B) with customers is all because you are sharing multidimensional content through lots of different stories.

Way too often businesses share multiple stories hammering home 1 idea or emotion like: happiness (Coke), safety (Volvo), speed (Jaguar).

Read the article for more details and the 4 emotions customer like the most.

Bottom line: forget share of mind -- it's all about share of emotion these days.

Hopefully you've seen this by now. But if not, this blog post clearly spells out the essential ingredients needed for building high performing teams.

What the article lacks are methods to make any of these 5 ingredients happen. There are good tools and methods out there.

What most neglect to tell you however is the significant role deliberate story evoking, story listening, and storytelling play in creating a high performing team.

Story evoking, story listening, and storytelling is narrative work and is critical in ingredients #3 (structure & clarity), #4 (meaning) and #5 (impact). When you add #2 (dependability) you generate #1 (psychological safety).

Psychological safety is also created by other ways you communicate (appreciation, acknowledgement, fairness, etc.). That means no yelling, threats, attacks, passive-aggressiveness, etc. You know -- all those qualities of toxic leaders.

Keep this list handy. Send me a question if you want more specifics about narrative practices and creating high performing teams.

What a sorry state of affairs for leaders and organizations. The original title of this post is targeted to content marketers and CMOs. But when you read the post, you see it's really an indictment on storytelling and leadership for the entire organization, not just marketing!

And frankly, it follows my experience over the last 20 years. Tons of companies and leaders tout their storytelling. But it looks -- according to this article -- on all talk and little action. And they've got the research to prove it.

Why is storytelling not being adopted by organizations -- even though it is the one skill that can remedy at least 5 critical areas in business? As the research says, it's because:

  1. It's not part of the culture or mindset
  2. Storytelling is a new skill set
  3. It's not measured or documented

That is so accurate!

Want results in sales, employee engagement, an inspiring vision that people believe in, a Teflon culture, and incredible leadership? Then up your storytelling game and quit fooling around.
