The Einstein Method for Freeing Your Creative Mind | Storied Lives | Storied Lives | Scoop.it
In 1905, Einstein introduced the world to his groundbreaking theory of special relativity. It’s a very complex theory that I couldn’t possibly begin to exp
Penelope's insight:

Most people know Einstein from his theory of relativity. As a refresher: E=MC [squared]. But how many know about his method to come up with so many good ideas?

Our minds, so muddled with to-do's, and bombardment from social media, need some extra blank space from somewhere.

The first clue from his mind is revealed in this quote: "If I had an hour to solve a problem, I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and five minutes thinking about solutions."

#1 is to clarity the problem

#2 What is the nature of the problem?

I love the fact that Einstein used his artistic side to help him solve complex problems. Read the article to go from tiny to great thinker.

Historian Reveals Ben Franklin's Not-So-Famous Sister - WBUR | Storied Lives

Historian Reveals Ben Franklin's Not-So-Famous Sister - WBUR | Storied Lives | Storied Lives | Scoop.it

"WBUR - Historian Reveals Ben Franklin's Not-So-Famous Sister."

 By Alex Ashlock.

Penelope's insight:

Did you know that Benjamin Franklin had a sister? I didn't. They wrote letters back and forth--Benny and Jenny. He wrote more letters to her than to anyone else.

Benjamin Franklin was the author of his own life. His youngest sister Jane was the author of other people’s lives, according to historian Jill Lepore. Her new book is entitled, “Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin."

This new book by Lepore is a fascinating peek into the life of a woman that most barely knew.

Communications at Tesla: Forget the chain of command

Communications at Tesla: Forget the chain of command | Storied Lives | Scoop.it
Elon Musk says employees should go around their managers if necessary.

Via Marc Wachtfogel, Ph.D., Bobby Dillard
Penelope's insight:
One must admire Elon Musk for all he has accomplished thus far, but his latest internal communication, I believe, is a recipe for disaster. The directive was to just forget about your manager, and go to whomever would solve the problem the fastest. Managers, already being the whipping boys, are going to rebel out loud or on the sly. I can't see this being helpful at all.

F. Scott Fitzgerald gave us a literary masterpiece, “The Great Gatsby.” He gave us another, particularly Southern masterwork, too: the mythology that now surrounds Louisville’s 112-year-old Seelbach Hotel.

Penelope's insight:

When it comes to donating an organ, many questions come to mind. He addresses 100 questions in the book he struggled through during a year of research and introspection.

A moving and informative book, it's aimed at educating and inspiring others to explore the journey of kidney donation. Now that is a story worth reading.

About Joshua & Ryan | The Minimalists

About Joshua & Ryan | The Minimalists | Storied Lives | Scoop.it

About The Minimalists At first glance, people might think the point of minimalism is only to get rid of material possessions: Eliminating. Jettisoning. Extracting. Detaching. Decluttering. Paring down. Letting go. But that’s a mistake. True, removing the excess is an important part of the recipe—but it’s just one ingredient.

Penelope's insight:
These guys are on to something. That is, living life to the fullest in its utter simplicity. They both had mega corporate jobs and were not happy. How many times have we heard this story? Being a servant first is hard work as a leader. The concept of servant-leadership was articulated by Robert Greenleaf and has many roots i.e. Quaker faith, Taoist principles, Gandhi, etc.

It would seem to me that teaching is an ideal way of serving and leading, but I see little evidence of it.

Who was Zora Neale Hurston? Get to know this singular woman, author of one of Florida’s greatest novels, "Their Eyes Were Watching God."
Penelope's insight:
This is worth checking out just to hear prolific Florida novelist Zora Neale Hurston herself singing a song she learned from a Florida railroad worker in 1933. The workers sang this when they were lining up the rails.

As novelist Stetson Kennedy wrote: Those were hard times back then, during the Great Depression of the 1930s. People sometimes referred to them as the “root-hog-or-die” days, meaning that if you didn’t keep grubbing you were a goner. Lots of folks were “hollerin’ hongry,” and longing for a little gravy on their grits.
