Reasons People Hire Storage Units

Storage Max's insight:

Why Are Self Storage Units So Popular With Consumers?

On one side of things, you see people flocking to rent out storage units, and then on the other side of things, you see people letting them go to where they hit auction. Why is that? First of all, to get the real picture, you have to look at the many various reasons why people hire storage units in the first place.

Consider a couple who is getting a divorce and their entire lives are in chaos. People are stuck moving out to a different residence quickly, and storage units are often used. These units can also be used to store mutual belongings that neither party wants to use or needs to hold in escrow until the divorce if finalized and property distributed. Of course, what would be an easy way out of distributing the property evenly? By all means, send it to auction!

Moving was mentioned, and that is another huge reason people end up using storage sheds. Like to more about why people end up giving them up or letting them go to auction, remember there is a monthly fee. Some people fall on hard times and end up not being able to keep the agreement and pay the monthly fee. Unfortunately, many people don't contact the storage facility to make amends and to continue making payments somehow or work something else out.

There are those people who let these units go on purpose as well. You see, over time, people can have a different view of belongings. Everyone thinks the latest electronic gadget is all great and everything, but if you were to stick it in a storage unit and open up the unit years later, that piece of equipment would like it came from the Stone Age.
Sometimes people do store precious belongings, but often just as many people store stuff that they no longer see as valuable as time goes by and their lives change. Some people also use storage units for more simple, short-term reasons.

They might be building a home and need a temporary place to put their things after finishing up an apartment lease. They might be renovating a business, and the list goes on and on. People hire storage units for enough reasons to keep all of the storage facilities open for business. But as you can see, there are reasons why there are storage auctions, too.

Are Self Storage Units a Good Investment?

Storage Max's insight:

Should You Invest In Self-Storage Units?

There are different ways to invest in self-storage units, and one of the most popular is always on public display via the television show Storage Wars. This popular show has people bidding on storage lockers at auctions in various cities around California, and they just started a spinoff of the series in Miami, Florida.

I am a huge fan of the show, but they find treasures so often it almost seems like they are fake sometimes. It's like they plant stuff in the storage lockers just to make it a good television show. Regardless of whether they do that or not, you're wondering if investing in storage units is a good choice or not. Well, if you're going to auctions and bidding on units to resell, it can be hit or miss.

With all the online auctions and user sales these days, people are closing their resell shops that they have and going to selling things online more often than anything. If wanting to sell in person, they typically hit up trade shows and the likes.

Of course, another popular way to invest in storage units is to buy a business with buildings full of units to rent out. You can make plenty of money this way by monthly rental charges, and you can even find ways to get a little extra money. Perhaps you buy the storage units, and then you make some of them climate controlled.

More and more clients are really paying attention to how they store their stuff. That being said, do you want to run an upscale storage unit facility, or would you rather run one that has more of a turnover and is a cheaper investment, more of a basic business? Many of these storage unit businesses have been held and are still held by private owners, and this means that if interested in selling, they can make very good business opportunities.

You can also secure the right parcel of land and build your storage facility. Of course, there are going to be all kinds of things surrounding opening up this can of worms. If somehow you were able to pull it off, that's great, but you're better off finding an existing one that is profitable. Of course, you have to be flexible, and you have to do your digging to find the right deal and the owner who is going to sell.
