A Ready-Made PLN for ELT Professionals...

The online version of Stone Soup! ELT Chat happens every week on twitter where EFL teachers around the world join together and discuss a topic that has been voted for through the week.

Here is an example of the weekly topics proposed:

1. Is there a place for swearing/teaching swearing in the ELT classroom?

  2. What is in your essential teaching kit – things you wouldn’t want to be without in the classroom?
[ 32% (18 votes) ]   3. Is motivation enough to learn English effectively? What ways do you use to encourage motivated, but lazy students to really do?
[ 12% (7 votes) ]   4. What specialized knowledge do I need to know to support the success of students studying English for Academic Purpose (EAP)?
[ 5% (3 votes) ]   5. How do we balance content between the face-to-face and the online components of a blended-learning course? Any tips for designing such a syllabus?
[ 23% (13 votes) ]   6. If you could design an app (Facebook and /or mobile) to plan and keep track of your PD. What features would you like it to have?” (see http://tinyurl.com/cdn6nxd
[ 9% (5 votes) ]

7. Alternative approaches and techniques in ELT? Have you tried out things like NLP or (de)suggestopaedia in your teaching? Why, how and what did you/your students get out of it?

Stone Soup Friday 1 May – Sharing Materials

SHARING RESOURCES
Ideas and queries that came up:
1. Teacher's Notes for each level are currently a good way to share different materials and direct teachers to good resources as both online and in hard copy. However, need to be kept up to date as some material is old dates quickly.
2. Where are we with sites such as www.scoop.it for sharing materials and ideas for each in-house level?
3. Instant Ideas – can this resource be edited? Possible project could be to select strong and relevant material for dissemination to all teachers.
4. OneStopEnglish monthly Guardian news reading exercises to be looked at and shared with other teachers. Index of current articles put on noticeboard by photocopier.
5. Discussed possible places in Teachers’ Room (5th floor) for displaying and sharing resources. Decided noticeboard above photocopier probably best.
