10 Ways To Shop Eco-Friendly Fashion In Manchester

10 Ways To Shop Eco-Friendly Fashion In Manchester | Stitched Up press | Scoop.it
Whether vintage or big brands, there's no need to compromise style for ethics
Stitched Up's insight:
"'Buy less, wear more' is the key rule to follow when shopping ethically. Yet, ‘buy less, make more’ is also a sustainable style ethos to live by. Chorlton based grassroots initiative, Stitched Up, have made sustainable fashion its mission, and the group aims to create an alternative fashion industry: one that’s guilt-free. It's extremely admirable. They say, ‘why buy new clothes when you can make your own?’ and offer attendees sewing and upcycling classes to help them do just that. Stitched Up also present eco-fashion events such as clothes-swaps, vintage fairs and a repair café where expert volunteers teach you how to repair clothes, bikes, furniture etc. All-in-all, Stitched-Up want its attendees to rethink how they view and consume clothes – instead of fast, throwaway fashion, it may be time to opt for slow, sustainable style."

'Creative and resourceful bunch': Manchester quick on the uptake with upcycling | Mancunian Matters

'Creative and resourceful bunch': Manchester quick on the uptake with upcycling | Mancunian Matters | Stitched Up press | Scoop.it
From cashmere jumper mittens to vodka bottle lamps and scrabble clocks, upcycling has gone mainstream in Manchester.

The city is aiming to recycle 50% of its waste by 2020 according to the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA).

It costs the council up to £157 per year to send just one black bin of rubbish to landfill, so local charities and businesses have been getting creative with Manchester’s waste.

Stitched Up is a cooperative in Chorlton running clothes swaps, classes and renting out sewing machines by the hour.
Stitched Up's insight:

Stitched Up is a cooperative in Chorlton running clothes swaps, classes and renting out sewing machines by the hour.

“The wonderful people of Manchester are an extremely creative and resourceful bunch and we have seen so much enthusiasm for upcycling since we opened.

“Look around Manchester and it seems that upcycling has gone mainstream – loads of bars are incorporating upcycled furniture or lighting into their decor.”

Stitched Up was born out of a ‘shared desire to challenge the dominance of the global fast fashion industry’.
