Theories of change are here to stay

"It is perhaps because theory of change is so important that its use gets abstracted: it gets mistaken for an end goal, rather than a means to an end—and this makes it an easy target. But I don’t believe charities have become overly dependent on theories of change or that they are getting in the way of effective monitoring and evaluation. The theory of change approach is needed. So let’s work to improve the way the approach is used rather than throw the baby out with the bathwater. Because we think it’s here to stay."

How can philanthropy support children in care?

Charities play a vital role in the care system, and we think there is a real opportunity for philanthropy to boost the work of this sector. We recently launched In your care? The role of philanthropy for children in care and care leavers, which explores how funders can make a difference in this complex area. Prioritising need is difficult.

Report Bürgerstiftungen 2017 | Stiftungen & Philanthropy | Scoop.it

Post-Peterborough: This is good news, but not a ‘case closed’ on the value of SIBs

Donating $100m is like donating anything else

"So, $100m is a sizeable donation. And one charity is in line to scoop the lot. The John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation, a $6.5bn foundation based in Chicago, is looking for “a single proposal that promises real and measurable progress in solving a critical problem of our time” to which it will donate $100m. More than 2,000 organisations applied to the aptly named 100 & Change campaign. Eight have been shortlisted.... But how can one choose between such divergent causes? We all face this question. It just looks different because most of us do not have so much to donate."

Offshore philanthropy

"Yet recent financial data leaks, including the Panama Papers and the earlier HSBC Swiss Files, act like glasses for the myopic—they bring into focus one of the wealth management practices that enables private individuals to hold on to resources. Moreover, a number of named individuals are well-known philanthropic donors. With these revelations, the sector should look hard at the uncomfortable ways in which some of our most respected institutions and advocates may be complicit in questionable practices."

Best way to give: charity, philanthropy, and everything in between

"The point is that there is no one best way to give. Sometimes charity is the answer, and sometimes it is philanthropy. Sometimes program-related investments may be the right way to go. The mix should vary with each donor and aim. What is wrong is the idea that philanthropy is an expert-driven profession that can only be practiced from the commanding heights. That sort of arrogance leads to philanthropic mistakes."

A Simple Idea to Make Foundation Grant Applications Better

"This got me wondering whether any foundations do that kind of thing: submit their own (hypothetical) application or respond to their own RFPs? Does any funder require their program staff to do what they are asking nonprofit organizations to do in order to gain funding?"

The magic of listening

"All this does not mean that Canada’s more than 5,000 foundations have suddenly turned into listeners, conveners and social justice advocates. But they seem to take serious the meaning of a community if practise. The symposium covered some of the toughest social challenges. It allowed reflection on these and avoided to jump to conclusions, solutions. Listening really does seem to have its very own magic."

"Combined, these trends prompted Fidelity Charitable donors to recommend a record-breaking $3.5 billion in grants to support more than 114,000 organizations in 2016. The trend continues this year with nearly $2 billion granted in the first six months of 2017, including an unprecedented nearly $9 million in bitcoin.
