Finally, a study that identifies a difference between how the brain processes vocal and instrumental music.    It's something that i have long believed is the case (and have built a business around it) but this is the first time I've seen some kind of scientific data.

Seems that in the presence of lyrics the brain shifts the processing of musical features towards the right auditory cortex - suggesting a left hemispheric dominance in the processing of the lyrics.

Now before we get all "Left brain this" and "right brain that" the study doesn't venture into the implications of the findings, but it's safe to say that with this first stone overturned - we should soon be getting a much deeper understanding of how all this works.

More anecdotal evidence from the Alzheimer world where music is driving therapy and helping patients to feel better.  I like this story because having started with music and then moving to dance they are now finding that the patients want to express themselves through other creative aspects such as art classes.

It seems to me that it's the underlying idea of creativity - whether that's in creating the melody with their voice or the moves of the dance or even the lines on the page - it is the act of creating that is mitigating the effects of Alzheimer's - I wonder....
