Peer or Self-Assessment? Benefits and Challenges

Peer or Self-Assessment? Benefits and Challenges | Stay tuned | Scoop.it
The benefits of peer and self-assessment are numerous and incontrovertible. However, students must have access to official mark schemes and model answers for the process to work properly, and they must be involved in actually correcting their work (not just ‘ticking’ and ‘crossing’ and working out a score/percentage).

Students need to be trained in proper peer-assessment. Do not tolerate over-generosity: collect the work in afterwards and double-check that it was marked properly.

Collaboration in Augmented Reality

Collaboration in Augmented Reality | Stay tuned | Scoop.it
AR systems can be used to create unique collaborative experiences. For example, co-located users can see shared 3D virtual objects that they interact with, or a user can annotate the live video view of a remote worker, enabling them to collaborate at a distance. The overall goal is to augment the face-to-face collaborative experience, or to enable remote people to feel that they are virtually co-located.

Thinking Critically through Digital Media

Thinking Critically through Digital Media | Stay tuned | Scoop.it

In a world where anyone with an internet connection can access, create and share information, opinions and beliefs, it has become increasingly important that students are not only able to assess the credibility of sources but also to look more deeply at the underlying motivations, beliefs and bias of the creator.
Thinking Critically through Digital Media enables teachers to use authentic materials and digital tools combined with motivating communicative tasks to develop students’ abilities to function as critical and well informed digital citizens.

Increase student engagement with podcasts

Increase student engagement with podcasts | Stay tuned | Scoop.it
Much of the research on whether students are more engaged when using podcasts and other multimedia tools has so far focused mainly on college students. It’s been shown that some students, especially those who reported low levels of interest in the course, are more engaged when using podcasts in combination with traditional education tools. Until more research is done in K-12, we can assume that these results translate to younger students as well.

All of this is very unfortunate. Ideally, the great academic minds of a society should be put to work for the sake of building up that society and addressing its problems. Instead, most Western academics today are using their intellectual capital to answer questions that nobody’s asking on pages that nobody’s reading.
