Farmers in Vientiane province kick start season-long trainings for developing “more intelligent pathway” for rice cultivation

Farmers in Vientiane province kick start season-long trainings for developing “more intelligent pathway” for rice cultivation | SRI-LMB | Scoop.it
Sri Lmb's insight:

The season long farmer’s training, known as Central Farmer’s Participatory Action Research (CFPAR) is going in full swing in Fouang district of Vientiane province since January until mid of May 2015 involving local farmers, provincial, district and national trainers and officials from Department of Agriculture Extension and Cooperative (DAEC) of Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) and experts from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. The training was inaugurated on 27th January 2015 at Fouang district

The CFPAR is a season-long training where the local rice farmers are being trained to develop location specific rice production technologies under the guiding principles of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) by setting experiments, documenting information and reporting key results and challenges concerning crop production at the community level. During CFPAR period, four intensive trainings will be conducted for approximately 30 selected farmer trainers chosen from three districts of the Vientiane Province. Similar trainings will be initiated in Savannakhet and Khammouan Province in coming wet season 2015. Read More..

Farmer Exchange Visit in Surin, Thailand (10-13 November 2014)

Farmer Exchange Visit in Surin, Thailand (10-13 November 2014) | SRI-LMB | Scoop.it
Sri Lmb's insight:

Single, younger and wider spaced rice plants taking climate variability in its stride

Younger single seedling (ต้นเดี่ยว/”Tn Deiyw”) & wider spacing led to tremendous response in plant’s vigor that resulted to “ZERO lodging” of the rice plants in Surin grown with SRI. The response was not only limited to commonly grown Homali 105 (Jasmine rice) rice but also niche varieties like Black Jasmine, Rice Berry and glutinous varieties like Ka Kho 6 (RD 6). Healthy and vigorous growth are paying rich dividends to the farmers and translating into higher yield, which many SMART farmers reported in terms of 4.6-5.5 Tons/ha, which is more than double compared to the normal yield. This was witnessed during a Farmer Exchange Visit recently held in Surin province of Thailand, 10-13 Nov 2014. Read More .. (http://www.sri-lmb.ait.asia/past/farmerex.php)

Continuing degradation of the environment and the cumulating food, energy, water and financial crises have led to a situation where many people’s access to sufficient, nutritious food is affected as well as their livelihoods, income, and ultimate food and nutrition security. In the wake of these stresses and crises, there is an emerging interest to find efficient, easily accessible and sustainable approaches that can address these crises.
