justin bennett's insight:

I liked this idea of linking sports with grades.  They realized that participation in sports was keeping kid off the streets and out of trouble.  So rather than cut them from the team when their grades slipped they still allowed them to dress out for the game they just weren't allowed to play.  They also helped in getting the kids tutors to help them get eligible.

justin bennett's insight:

This is a great article highlighting teamwork and overcoming hardship.  This team is completely deaf.  Football is a highly communicable sport and the need to alert the team at the last second is extremely important.  Although this team is deaf they turned their disadvantage into an advantage.  They used there sign language as a natural secret code and emplored a high paced offense with <7 seconds between each play.  All and all they scored 329 points in 11 games

Ability to use psychology in sports 'vital'
Gulf Daily News
YOU'RE a football coach. You're losing at halftime in the biggest match of your career, you're about to face your players. What do you say to them?
justin bennett's insight:

This article stresses the growing importance of psychology in sports.  It shows how psychology can be used not only to boost the performance of your players but also how it can be used to disrupt the opposing teams flow.  Such as the coach who never had pre-game huddles, this instilled a sense of invicibility of his team to the opposing team.  Also in football where the team executes plays back to back to disrupt the defensives ability to recover and read what is happening.

Alabama football: Players meeting used to motivate this week
Montgomery Advertiser
The top-ranked Alabama football team had just won its third game of the season, 31-6 victory over Colorado State on Saturday night.
justin bennett's insight:

This article hit on the leadership topic we've been dealing with a lot in class.  Coach Saban relied on his veteran players to instill committment in the younger class and to get his message through to the team when he was unaffective.  I thought this highlighted a cooperative aspect to his coaching.

He won't get any extra motivation from his quarterback. Last Sunday, Stills caught two passes for 86 yards during a 23-17 season-opening win against Atlanta.
justin bennett's insight:

I found this article interesting because Kenny Still's of the New Orleans Saints takes the negative criticism of him portrayed in the media, which elicits anger, and uses that anger to drive his motivation on the field.  More players should take their anger and negativity and use it as motivation rather than an obstacle.
