Soccer is one of the most popular team sports in the United States, and offers an excellent form of exercise to children and adults alike. Unfortunately, the nature of the sport, the repeated movement and the chance of collision, add up to quite a few opportunities for injury.

 

Lower and upper extremity injuries, overuse injuries, and head, neck, and face injuries are commonplace. According to Stanford Children's Health, "88,000 children 8-14 were treated in an emergency room for soccer-related injuries."

 

Soccer players who take certain precautionary measures decrease their chances of injury. Let’s look at three ways you can avoid injury as a soccer player:

#1: Soccer: Use Proper Equipment

Donning proper fitting cleats, uniforms, and shin guards decrease the risk of being hurt in the first place. Make adjustments often, especially if the player is growing rapidly or fluctuates in weight.

#2: Get Checked Out By A Chiropractor Pre-Season

Soccer players who allow their fitness less to lapse increase the chance of injury. Visit a Doctor of Chiropractic to ensure there are no underlying issues with participating in strenuous activity. A chiropractor is also able to make sure the spine is aligned and muscles and joints are strong and functioning properly.

#3: Pay Attention To The Surroundings

A field that is not kept up well offers a greater chance of turning an ankle or falling. It's vital to check out the playing area beforehand and note any uneven areas that could cause a player to trip.

 

In addition, consider the weather. Muddy, slick fields create extra issues, and particularly hot temperatures make players run the risk of dehydration or heat stroke. Prepare for weather issues in advance of the game.

 

If, even though you take all of these precautions, you still end up injured, there are several options for treatment. The injury is hopefully mild and heals on its own after a few days of rest. More serious injuries require a doctor visit, and one of these three treatments.

 

First, ice and elevate it: Keep weight off the injured area as much as possible, and elevate it with pillows. Use an ice bag wrapped in a towel to keep down swelling and inflammation. If the injury is painful, over the counter medication helps reduce discomfort.

 

Then, take a break: The last decision you want to make is to begin playing too soon and re-injure yourself. With more serious injuries, sitting out of a few games, or even an entire season, is a choice that promotes healing and health. Talk to your chiropractor about the timeframe the injury needs to be able to recover correctly, and follow his or her advice.

 

Finally, keep your chiropractic adjustments: Chiropractors are trained in treating the neuromusculoskeletal system as a whole. Many of the injuries suffered from soccer show an improvement after a few chiropractic visits.

 

 

Spinal and joint alignment, muscle healing, and tendon relaxation are all techniques chiropractors employ to promote and hasten healing. Additionally, chiropractors give insight on valuable ways to use nutrition and exercise to keep the body functioning at optimum capacity, to avoid re-injury.

The piriformis muscle extends to the top of the femur around the sciatic nerve. The femur, as previously mentioned, is the large bone in the upper leg. The piriformis muscle functions by helping the thigh move from side to side. A piriformis muscle spasm, or any other type of injury and/or condition along the piriformis muscle, can place pressure on the sciatic nerve and cause pain and discomfort. The result is piriformis syndrome.

 

Piriformis Syndrome Causes and Symptoms


Sciatic nerve pain, or sciatica, is one of the most prevalent symptoms of piriformis syndrome. The pain and discomfort, however, may be felt in another part of the body. This is known as referred pain. Other common symptoms of piriformis syndrome include tingling sensations and numbness; tenderness; difficulty sitting along with pain while sitting and pain in the buttocks and thighs with physical activities.

 

The piriformis muscle can easily become damaged or injured from periods of inactivity or an excessive amount of exercise. Some common causes of piriformis syndrome include overuse; repetitive movements involving the legs; sitting for lengthy periods of time; lifting heavy objects; and extensive stair climbing. Sports injuries or automobile accident injuries can also harm the piriformis muscle and cause it to compress the sciatic nerve.

Knee Injuries: Alex Jimenez was a wrestler for 15 years when he suffered an ACL tear. Once diagnosis confirmed his knee injury, Alex Jimenez began an extensive care regimen, consisting of chiropractic care with Dr. Alex Jimenez and crossfit rehabilitation, in order to help him recover. Now that Alex Jimenez dedicates himself to health and fitness, he's always mindful of engaging in the proper exercises to avoid suffering another sports injury. With a positive mentality, Alex Jimenez was able to find his life plan when his ACL tear healed completely.

Chiropractic Care For Knee Injuries 

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most commonly injured ligaments of the knee. The prevalence of ACL injury is higher in athletes who take part in sports, such as basketball, soccer, skiing, and football. Roughly half of ACL injuries occur together with injury to the meniscus, articular cartilage, or other ligaments. Furthermore, patients may have lumps of the bone beneath the cartilage surface. These might be seen on a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan and might indicate injury to the overlying articular cartilage.

Hip Labral Tear Treatment 

Labrum tears in athletes can occur from a single event or recurring trauma. Running may cause labrum tears due to the labrum being utilized more for weight bearing and taking excess forces while at the end-range motion of the leg. Sporting activities are probable causes, specifically those that require frequent hip rotation or pivoting to a loaded femur as in ballet or hockey. After receiving a single adjustment, many people especially athletes can expect an increase in their range of motion and less pain. Regardless of the reasons for seeking chiropractic treatment, one question always crosses people’s minds, how often should one see a chiropractor?

 

The answer to that question depends on the individual’s goals. Generally, spinal complications are not the result of a single day’s activities but tend to occur gradually over a period of time. Many spine conditions and injuries result in symptoms that may intermittently increase and decrease over several years, causing constant, nagging pain or sharp, extreme pain due to wear and tear type of injuries that the body is no longer able to heal on its own.

 

Healing requires time and patience, a person also needs to be aware of what caused the complications in the first place. Suddenly stopping strict exercise routines or gaining weight in a certain amount of time can create an accelerated aging process on the joints.

 

If an individual’s goals are solely focused on alleviating the pain resulting from one time, then it won’t take much time to heal. Generally, receiving adjustments 2-3 times per week for several weeks can ease pain and decrease other symptoms. But, if a person is seeking to relieve the symptoms associated with an underlying condition or injury, or if a person is seeking to correct an improper posture or a mechanical dysfunction, the process could be much longer. This healing process often may require about 2-3 months of regular adjustments.

 

Despite completing treatment and successfully alleviating any symptoms, it is recommended to continue chiropractic adjustments on a regular basis. What is considered a regular basis for adjustments? Getting adjusted at least once a week by a chiropractor can help maintain a person’s overall health and can prevent small problems from becoming greater issues. For a greater majority of individuals, especially those who sit most of the day, it’s recommended to maintain an adjustment schedule every week or two. Question: What is the difference between good pain and bad pain? My coach cautioned me that if I feel bad pain, that I should stop the activity. What does that mean?

Sports injury chiropractor Dr. Alexander Jimenez discusses the difference and the type of action to take.

 

'No pain, no gain': that famous cliché related to sports and physical fitness training, is frequently discovered but is not necessarily correct. Sometimes, pushing yourself and generating pain in the muscles is advantageous and other times it's damaging.

 

Physiotherapists and sports medics may be familiar with what are appropriate levels of pain which bring about benefits, and levels that are too stressful that will lead to injury. Fitness trainers and sports trainers may be less confident at making the distinction. This article (based on McFarland et al, 2003, Health and Fitness Journal 7(4), p 11-16) is a guide to trainers and coaches to help them identify one proper levels of training and two whether acute injuries have occurred or chronic injuries are progressing.

What Is Too Much?

During a tough training session an athlete will begin to tire. Fatigue is a sign that the body is stressed. For a training effect to happen, the body requires stress to stimulate the muscles in order to grow back stronger. The body requires only the perfect quantity of stress at a suitable frequency to improve the training benefit. If the athlete is doing a conditioning session (for aerobic or anaerobic endurance), then an exhilarated feeling of fatigue at the end is the right degree of training. An athlete would not be able to maintain the intensity of work or would have to muster mental strength to maintain the intensity, by the end of a tough session.

 

After a conditioning exercise, it is essential that the athlete refuels and then rehydrates his entire body, and rests. If conditioning sessions occur too often or with insufficient nutrition then the athlete's performance might decline. This is a sign of 'overtraining', that the training program or workouts are past the athlete's current physiology. Pain That Persists

This is extremely common when an athlete starts a new type of training or the level of training is increased quickly. It's also very typical in unconditioned adults following rare bouts of exercise. Eccentric exercise is also associated with elevated levels of DOMS.

Dealing With DOMS

A little DOMS is fine, some athletes even like it after a strength session as it tells them they have trained well, and also a small degree of DOMS is fine for athletes to continue their own training program. When an athlete is accustomed to the exercise or workout then the seriousness of DOMS is generally reduced or disappears entirely. DOMS that triggers serious stiffness, muscle tenderness or swelling to touch is a indication that the training has been too stressful. Full rest is recommended before continuing with training in this situation, otherwise the muscle tissues could be damaged.

 

The tendons also adapt to stress, in the exact same way that muscles do, getting better able to cope with high or repetitive forces. Too much too soon, can lead to tendinitis, which is associated with pain, stiffness and swelling. A fantastic indicator that the training has caused damage is when the tendinitis causes pain during regular daily activities, in addition to those connected with sport. For example, a knee may feel a little sore at the end of a four-mile run, suggesting patella tendinitis, however if this feeling stops once the run ends then the athlete has likely done little damage. If, however, the athlete wakes up the next morning and the knee feels sore walking up and down stairs then the injury should be taken more seriously.

 

Stress to the bones could be detected by the feeling of aching along the length of the bone. Any feeling like this should alert the athlete to a potential stress fracture and encourage him to see a sports physician.

Action To Take

Any critical muscle, bone or tendon pain that's described above must be treated. There are four basic techniques of treatment that will help most athletes and should be carried out immediately:

 

Rest. This means avoiding any activity that stresses the painful area. Athletes can still do upper-body weights and swimming when, they have a leg injury . Aim to rest till pain symptoms have gone. If the pain occurs after rest, it's a sure sign of an injury.

 

Ice. Useful at any time at controlling inflammation. Be cautioned, however, that if a muscle or joint needs to be constantly iced after each training session then more serious therapy and rest will be required. Ice works, but when it's always needed to reduce pain, then the athlete is most likely pushing him or herself too hard.

 

Various Movement Exercises. Stiffness is frequently related to pain and increased resistance to movement will stop an injury from healing fully. Non-stressful movements which encourage the entire range-of-motion are helpful for almost any injured muscle or joint. Dynamic stretching exercises without weights work well.

 

Anti-inflammatory Medications. Over the counter medication is also helpful for reducing soreness.

 

Staying injury-free can be more of a challenge than training hard and getting fit. Understanding muscle soreness along with the appropriate levels and timescales of this pain will allow athletes and coaches to train at the right levels and rest for the proper time to avoid injury and optimize fitness.

Concussions can be tricky to diagnose. Making it even harder, sometimes people brush off a head injury at first and only days later decide to see a doctor.

But soon physicians may have a new tool to help. A study by researchers from Orlando Regional Medical Center shows that a simple blood test can detect whether or not someone has suffered a concussion as long as a week after the initial injury. The test may even eventually help guide treatment in individuals.

The study included 584 patients with trauma-related injuries who visited Orlando Regional Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center. Half had brain-related injuriesand half had other types of traumatic injuries, such as broken bones.

Patellofemoral Syndrome: As the weather warms and spring is in full swing, more and more runners are heading outside, hitting the pavement to train for upcoming races or to just step up their game after a long winter. While there are some die hard runners who don’t let even the most brutal winter stop them, most tend to retreat indoors, waiting for warmer days and a more pleasant environment. Unfortunately, increased activity can also lead to an increased risk of injury, particularly patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), also known as runner’s knee.

What Is Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome?

Runner’s knee is often used to describe PFPS, but runner’s knee is actually a broader term describing several different knee injuries or ailments. PFPS is a painful condition that is caused when the tissue that is between the femur (thigh bone) and the patella (kneecap) becomes inflamed or irritated.

 

Most people will notice pain in the front portion or anterior part of the knee, but pain can be experienced in other parts of the knee and even back pain may occur. Running increases the discomfort, as does sitting for long periods and going up or down stairs.

 

The causes of PFPS can also vary widely. Overuse is often the first thing that people think, but a problem with the way the knee is aligned is actually the most common reason.

 

If the patella is not properly aligned, when it moves through the groove that is at the end of the femur, it causes irritation to the surrounding tissues. This usually happens because the muscles and joints are out of balance.

 

For instance, if the quad muscle on one side is weaker than the other side it throws the entire system out of balance, causing the knee to become misaligned. This leads to knee pain and discomfort.

Treatment For Patellofemoral Syndrome - Runner’s Knee

When treating PFPS, rest is usually first on the list, followed by icing the area to reduce inflammation. Once the pain is under control, the next step is to determine what is causing the problem. It is important to rule out more serious conditions or injuries first in order to determine the best course of treatment.

 

If it is indeed PFPS, strengthening the muscles in and around the knee is generally the first step in treatment. It is important that the muscle strength is balanced so that the knee can be properly aligned. Getting a good pair of running shoes is also recommended so that future injury can be prevented.

Chiropractic For Runner’s Knee

Runner’s knee, or PFPS, responds very well to chiropractic treatment. The chiropractor is able to do a complete exam and find the cause of the problem, then tailor the treatment accordingly. This is typically done on a case by case basis with treatment that is based on the individual’s unique needs. The chiropractor may do various chiropractic alignments and manipulations on the spine, hip, ankle, and knee in order to bring the body back into proper balance.

 

The chiropractor may also recommend other complimentary treatments including special supplements, dietary adjustments, and an exercise plan. The chiropractor may also recommend certain stretching exercises to aid in healing. Kinesio taping is another common treatment that may be used in conjunction with chiropractic care. It is particularly beneficial when there is a muscular strength imbalance. The tape can help support the weaker muscle group.

 

Chiropractic care is a very effective treatment for patellofemoral syndrome and the associated knee pain. It works to correct the problem by bringing the body back into proper alignment, allowing it to function as it should.

ACL Sports Injury Therapy 

Anterior cruciate ligament injury is when the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is either stretched, partially torn, or totally torn. The most common injury is a tear that is complete. Symptoms include pain, a popping sound during trauma, instability of the knee, and joint swelling. Swelling generally appears within a couple hours. In approximately 50 percent of cases, other structures of the knee, for example surrounding cartilage, ligaments, or the meniscus, are damaged.
