Virtual Sports Stadiums Can Be Useful During Emergency Planning | RDPC

What would happen in the event of a bombing or other disaster during a major sporting event? Evacuating thousands of panicked spectators would definitely have its challenges.

With the help of new simulation software, University of Southern Mississippi researchers will have the ability to study evacuation procedures at virtual sports stadiums. The software uses blueprints from actual sporting arenas and allows researchers to see how the attendees of a sporting event might behave in the event of a security threat. The simulation software attempts to account for the behavior of panicked spectators, as well as stadium employees, and first responders.

By utilizing such software, emergency planners at sports stadiums will have the ability to study exits, identify areas where major congestion may occur, and evaluate how frightened spectators might react during an evacuation. Good planning could possibly save numerous lives during a disaster or terrorist attack at a major sporting event.
