Florida Panthers Lay Off Mascot Stanley C. Panther Due to NHL Lockout

Florida Panthers Lay Off Mascot Stanley C. Panther Due to NHL Lockout | Sports Facility Management.4439041 | Scoop.it

Via NBC6:

The Florida Panthers became the second team to announce a round of layoffs this week after the National Hockey League locked out its players and initiated the fourth work stoppage in the last 20 years. Citing lost revenue due to the lockout, the Panthers reduced jobs in multiple departments.

The layoffs are so deep that the team mascot, Stanley C. Panther, is among the workers out of a job this week.

Laying off the mascot is an unusual move. During the NBA and NFL lockouts of 2011, neither Burnie (the Miami Heat's mascot) nor TD (the Miami Dolphins') lost their jobs, though some Dolphins employees had their wages temporarily cut (but later repaid).

No games have been canceled as of Tuesday, but the cancellation of preseason games could happen as soon as this week. It is almost certain that preseason training camps will not open on time.

The Panthers are still attempting to operate business as usual. The team was still selling single-game and season tickets on Tuesday, including tickets for the scheduled opener against the Tamp Bay Lightning on Oct. 13...

Hockey Classic Could Boost Shuttle Direct Business

Shuttle Direct’s services in Geneva could experience a boost in demand in January, as a number of ice hockey fans fly into the Swiss capital for the local ‘Winter Classic’.

This title refers to a major hockey match which takes places every winter at one of the major cities in Switzerland, and involves two of the country’s most expressive hockey teams - the 2014 confrontation will see Geneva-Servette and Lausanne square off against each other. The popularity of the two teams alone was already likely to have fans from outside Geneva seeking the services of companies such as Shuttle Direct, but as an added incentive, the match will actually be held in an open-air stadium, the Stade de la Praille, on the outskirts of the city.

According to the owner and manager of the home club, the chance to play in a stadium is the culmination of a ten-year dream. The representative has stated that Geneva-Servette fully intends to sell out the Stade de la Praille’s 30,000 seat capacity for this match-up with their rivals from Lausanne, and boldly stated that a house of under 25,000 people would be a disappointment. Considering the match will be televised, this is something of an ambitious goal, but the club is undaunted, as the 1.5 million Swiss franc investment in making this event happen clearly proves.

Spectators who do make the trip to the Stade de La Praille (whether by their own means or through companies such as Shuttle Direct ) will be treated not only to the match, but also to a number of events in and around it, including a light show, live musical performances and fireworks – all traditionally associated with European ice hockey. The grassy pitch around the hockey rink itself will also be covered in white canvas sheets, for added wintry effect.

The reason for the club’s enthusiasm has to do with the fact that this is the first ‘Winter Classic’ to take place in Geneva since 2007. On that occasion, the event was held at the Stade de Suisse, with the teams from Berne and Langnau providing the puck-striking action.

Scott J. Fields's curator insight, June 27, 2013 8:21 PM

The video article went over the three year process of the renovation and expansion of the largest stadium in North America, University of Michigan's Big House. Built in 1927, the Big House needed 21st century improvements to put up with the demands of a stadium that houses more than 110,000 fans on Saturday's. The construction crew went to great links to insure the safety of the spectators since they continued construction throughout the college football season for three years, each and every Thursday throughout the football season the crew would close down the site and clear everything for the game on Saturday. Maybe the article is not about "crowd management" exactly, but it does take into consideration the  management of the crowd's safety.

This article addresses the keeping the fans safe. Although it is important of maintaining good sight lines to see the game, keeping fans safe should also be a priority. Maintaining railing only to code seems to be out of date. Maybe when the code was established, the risk of them falling was lower. Raising the minimum height of the railings while still maintaining the line of sight for fans would be a good way to keep them safe while enjoying the game.
