Ethical Dilemmas in Collegiate Athletics: The Role of Coaches and the Codes of Ethic | The Sport Digest

Ethical Dilemmas in Collegiate Athletics: The Role of Coaches and the Codes of Ethic | The Sport Digest | Sports Ethics: Hansen, J | Scoop.it

Competitive sports have a tremendous impact on our culture, influencing the values of millions of participants and spectators. It has been said that “Sport is too much a game to be a business and too much a business to be a game” (Hums, Barr, & Gullion, 1999).

The ethics in coaching in sports diminishes when sport becomes more of a business. You will hear professional athletes talk about the business side of sports. The problem I see is when the business supersedes ethical behavior. At times we see that it does and then there is a surprise feeling when this happens when there shouldn't be. The establishment of ethical behavior will breed ethical behavior.

More often than not, there are more instances that high school coaches care more about winning. But we see that trend is turning away from that and more care is taken with the players and teaching life lessons is becoming the new gameplan

Legal and Ethical Responsibilities of a Coach

How many career options can provide the excitement, challenges and satisfaction of coaching? Coaches at all levels experience the pleasure of watching young people develop sport skills and contribute to successful teams. However, coaches also have important legal and ethical obligations to their schools and their athletes. Many of these obligations or responsibilities are natural extensions of the mission and goals of the high school athletic program. Others are defined legally or are expectations of society for a “teacher” in a school activity.

Coaches must adhere to legal and ethical responsibilities within the profession. These responsibilities are outlined through certification classes. All coaches must keep athletes safe both physically and emotionally and these standard that they must follow are outlined in the National Association for Sport Physical Education. A coach needs to be a role model for athletes under his or her care.

Renee Seruntine's curator insight, May 14, 2014 3:53 PM

Legal and ethical obligations play an important role in how a coach will teach his or her players.

Dillon Fury's curator insight, September 10, 2014 12:44 PM

There's a lot of weight resting on the shoulders of a coach. They are to make good ethical decisions for their players and themselves.
