Cory Madden's curator insight, October 16, 2013 1:54 PM

This article talks about the sportsman model of sports saying that all players should follow the 4 basic rules of ethics, Fairness, Integrity, Responsibility, and Respect. It says "The sportsmanship model is built on the idea that sport both demonstrates and encourages character development, which then influences the moral character of the broader community." This is true because every sport has rules pushed and sometimes not noticed. It gave some good insight to how a player should play a sport.

Jason Cain's curator insight, March 16, 2014 1:05 PM

Most interesting article on ethics in sports. The difference between gamenship and sportsmanship was addressed. Gamenship is winning at all cost no matter what. Sportsmanship is healthy competition. It seems as though the sporting activities today have evolved more into gamenship rather than good clean fun which is sportmanship.

Is PED use really cheating?

Is PED use really cheating? | Sports Ethics: Camper, A. | Scoop.it

Every so often throughout history, science and technology end up making society recalibrate its ideas on just what we consider fair and unfair, and right and wrong. Which begs the question, should athletes who use or have used PEDs be branded as cheaters?

The common sentiment for most people is unequivocally yes — any athlete who uses any sort of PED is threatening the sanctity of their game and therefore all their accomplishments must be viewed as fraudulent. Still, it's worth examining at A) why we draw the line with HGH and B) why are athletics held to a much higher standard than any other profession?...

PEDs are not only used in professional sports, they have been used at the high school and college level and even in sports such as NASCAR.

Steroid use can be categorized under both professional and personal ethics as far as personal use and abiding to rules and regulations prohibiting it's use.

Jamison Fausett's curator insight, February 8, 2014 11:52 AM

While I strongly disagree with the use anabolic steroids, I think the way we look at steroids as a society could be adjusted. From my own research there is many positive benefits that could come from the use of Human Growth hormone.

Lance Armstrong Ends Fight Against Doping Charges, Losing 7 Tour de France Titles, Olympic medal, Will Be Barred For Life

Lance Armstrong Ends Fight Against Doping Charges, Losing 7 Tour de France Titles, Olympic medal, Will Be Barred For Life | Sports Ethics: Camper, A. | Scoop.it

Via The New York Times:

After more than a decade of outrunning accusations that he had doped during his celebrated cycling career, Lance Armstrong, one of the best-known and accomplished athletes in recent history, surrendered on Thursday, etching a dark mark on his legacy by ending his fight against charges that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

Armstrong, who won the Tour de France an unprecedented seven straight times, said Thursday that he would not continue to fight the charges levied against him by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, which contended that he doped and was one of the ringleaders of systematic doping on his Tour-winning teams.

His decision means he will almost certainly be stripped of his seven Tour titles, the bronze medal he won at the 2000 Olympics and all other titles, awards and money he won from August 1998 on.

It also means he will be barred for life from competing, coaching or having any official role with any Olympic sport or other sport that follows the World Anti-Doping Code...

Lance Armstrong could be the most influential sports figure, for the wrong reasons. He did so much for cancer research and was so succesful in cycling, and now that is all gone. What a shame

Lisa Kirk's curator insight, May 15, 2015 12:00 AM

Lance Armstrong was a role model for his accomplishments as an athlete.  As a cancer survivor and true legend to many, lost so much respect when he lied to the world about using PED (performance-enhancing drugs).  Just reading this article makes me realize how much an athlete would do in order to win illegally and immorally.  I am thankful that he has no part in coaching or any other roles in sports.
