Has Blended Learning Reached the Tipping Point?

Has Blended Learning Reached the Tipping Point? | Teacher Education | Scoop.it

"Malcom Gladwell (2017) describes the tipping point as “that magic moment when an idea crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire.” It is extremely challenging to predict when educational models are going to reach that so called tipping point. This is because educational systems are inherently complex with multiple factors that affect adoption."

I wouldn't say that virtual reality is 'mainstream' or anywhere near to being close to that, but still some interesting points.

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, May 12, 2017 12:33 PM

Always amazing that finds like this are news.  Seriously?  The brain is wired for challenge....surface learning and learning without purpose and understanding is not challenging. This is one of the biggest differences between American education and other countries.  We cover twice the material in our textbooks while others go deep.  What difference does it make?  From my observations, international students are more likely to connect the material in creative ways, actually recall the material because they can connect it, and end up with a mind more interested in learning.

The "Good Practice" website shares, as you would expect, good practice and supporting resources, allowing visitors to download information and watch video clips to support their own work.

Currently there are only a few case studies in the "Adult Learning & Skills" section at the moment, however, when further examples are added and the section developed, I'm sure it will become an excellent resource.

Abstract

This paper presents a study grounded in the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework using qualitative content analysis and focus group interviews in an effort to identify aspects of learning presence in a blended learning course. Research has suggested that the CoI framework may need additional emphasis based on the roles of strategic learners in online environments. Consequently, this qualitative study investigated the extent to which learning presence, the fourth presence of the CoI framework, manifested itself in a blended mode of delivery. The specific focus was on learning presence and how it precipitated in a blended-learning environment. Findings from the study indicated that a lack of self-regulation skills, such as time-management, coordination, and management of tasks, influenced the learning presence and required a stronger teaching presence. We concluded that self-regulation skills are supportive of effective learning in a blended learning environment.

Technology's Impact on Learning Outcomes: Can It Be Measured?

Technology's Impact on Learning Outcomes: Can It Be Measured? | Teacher Education | Scoop.it
In order for us to be able to evaluate whether technology use improves student learning outcomes, my sense is that we as educators must redefine those outcomes and the methods with which they will be measured. Additionally, if teachers were better equipped to use technology, not only would students have a more consistent experience from class to class, but we could actually begin to see what effects the technology is having on student learning through more disciplines and over longer periods of time

Welcome to Learner View | Ofsted Learner View | Teacher Education | Scoop.it

Learners given a voice to rate...

- their learning provider's quality of teaching and

- whether courses are preparing them for the demands of university or the workplace.

Learner View asks for their opinion on a range of 10 aspects: from whether the lessons/training sessions are well taught to if you would recommend the provider to a friend.

The information provided will be taken into consideration when Ofsted make decisions about which providers to inspect, and when.

By sharing their views, it is felt that they'll be helping their provider to improve. Learners will also be able to see what other learners have said about their provider.

Collected data will be used by the education watchdog as part of the official inspections process and could lead to colleges or training providers being marked down.

Note: All students using this new-style “Learner View” site will remain completely anonymous but there is a requirement to provide an email address before logging on.

Nineteen Ways for Students to Prepare for Flipped Classrooms

Nineteen Ways for Students to Prepare for Flipped Classrooms | Teacher Education | Scoop.it
In a flipped classroom, students typically interact with a short micro-video (flipped video) before class and then class time is transformed into an active place of engagement and learning. Some teachers think that students take to flipped learning quickly. However, since many students have been trained in how to learn passively, they need to have explicit instructions on how to learn differently in a flipped classroom. Below is a series of suggestions teachers may find helpful to hand out to students to prepare them for a flipped classroom.
