Social Media Strategy and Consumer Apathy

Social Media Strategy and Consumer Apathy | Social media and IMC | Scoop.it
With endless talk about social media, any business owner could be forgiven for believing that social media is the be all and end all, the answer to all of their prayers.

Samantha Brown's insight:

This article places importance on not using social media as your only marketing outlet. (Don't put all your eggs in one basket) The facts are that not all people use social media and you may not be targeting equally valuable customers that do not use social media. Marketers must also consider other barriers of social media marketing that they might not have considered such as 'noise' that consumers will need to filter through and that may draw attention away from what you are trying to market. Facebook Edgerank which determines what content your fans or consumers may actually see on their news feed. Also the number of Facebook users is declining, and not all users log into their various social media accounts everyday. More focus needs to be put on other channels of communication, such as email possibly.

There is no doubt that Social Media is the new hype of today's marketing strategy. Albeit very exciting and shiny - marketers need to be mindful that a lot of consumers still live outside the online social sphere and have no interest to be a part of it. I don't think original marketing strategies such as print advertising will ever be extinct - especially if your target audience includes consumers of an older generation. Even the younger generation is signing off from Facebook and other social platforms. @ashali89

Great article about how much noise can be found on social media and maybe facebook isn't the answer its pro-ports to be!

manisha mehta's curator insight, September 30, 2014 9:49 PM

This article looks how social media users are decreasing in some areas and that it should not be the only channel used in a marketing strategy. In the UK there are a declining number of Facebook users in the last 9 months. This is important for companies to have a strong IMC strategy which uses many different channels to attract targeted consumers in different ways as Facebook may not always be useful. this article also mentions that only 10-15%of Facebook fans will even have your posts show up on your timeline. this means that even with promotions and constant posts, the amount of clutter on social media sites such as Facebook means that it is harder to reach consumers. Therefore marketing agencies need to be creative and have a clear IMC strategy though many different communication disciplines to attract and retain your targeted consumers efficiently.

Adam singer makes very important point in this short clip about how a companies social media channel and presences. it is clear that social media Is an extremely important part of a companies IMC program but how you use it can separate you from the clutter created with increasing use. Adam singer points out by taking social media a step further by creating a blog, forum or network you will be able to gain greater control and influence over your consumer/viewers and step away from generic forms such as Facebook and twitter. By putting more effort into your social media platform selection and strategy your company will gain a stronger IMC program able to attract and attain new consumers.

Nutricia Belgium has launched a product promotion advertising and marketing campaign through its new video commercial “The Instant Pregnancy" and iPhone app “Baby Connection”.
Created and developed by creative agency Duval Guillaume Antwerp, Nutricia, one of the well known brand and specialist of baby food and clinical nutrition products, has offered Belgian fathers to have a chance to experience the pregnancy with a high tech empathy suit.
Aimed to introduce the fathers-to-be about what thier wives and girlfriends go through, the empathy suit mimics the sensation of pregnancy. As demonstrations, Nutricia has been taking the empathy suit to shopping malls to let people try it. As a result, the guys who try it on seem to come away with a new respect for their better half.
As a part of the integrated communication strategies, Nutricia also created an awesome iPhone app “Baby Connection” designed for both pregnant women and their husbands, allowing both to record aspects of the pregnancy in a timeline that can be shared via social media.
The Baby Connection apps share everything that they plan, learn, feel, see and hear during these special pregnancy months. The iPhone app also automatically allows two phones held together to form one giant screen.
I think this is such a great case of an IMC strategy that contatins advertising, promotion, viral marketing and social media for communicating with their core target. Their method to approach the target is so remarkable because they considered not only the current target who is pregnant and husband but also the prospective target who is going to be the pregnant and husband in the near future.

Google analytics, Klout, Wildfire social media monitor, My top tweet and Hootsuite are a few programs organisations can use to monitor the amount of views, likes, retweets, duration of viewing and the demographics of users amoung many other things. This can be useful to companies in marketing as they can use this knowledge to adapt marketing strategies and tell whether or not they are effective .
