11 Things Your Barista Wishes You Knew - POPSUGAR

11 Things Your Barista Wishes You Knew - POPSUGAR | Specialty Coffee | Scoop.it
What do baristas know that you don't? For one thing, that bringing your own reusable cup is more convenient than you think. That's why we partnered with KeepCup on this post.
Ryan Siu's insight:

Some of these are common sense. Don't talk on your phone while trying to order, be ready to pay when you order, double check to make sure it is your drink you are taking, etc. A couple are a bit ridiculous.

"Be smart" was one that I found a bit off. I like being able to talk with a customer to explain the differences in drinks. It is my time to do a little coffee education with a customer and helps me build a better connection with them. That connection, in my opinion, is why people come back.

Also, I found the mention of tipping to be a bit uncomfortable, I want people to tip because they enjoy the product and the service they receive. Tipping to get "extras", especially during a rush, is the wrong way to go about getting those "extras"--whatever they may be. We appreciate tips but we don't make coffee for the money, we do it because we love coffee.

Conan O'Brien parodies specialty coffee - Boston Globe

Conan O'Brien parodies specialty coffee - Boston Globe | Specialty Coffee | Scoop.it
Yes, specialty coffee is ripe for parody. There’s the pretentiousness, the high-end equipment, and the talk about flavor profiles. Conan O’Brien used all of that to great effect on his show Tuesday night.
Ryan Siu's insight:

This is hilarious.

Dunkin’ Donuts strikes westward as Krispy Kreme makes a new attempt at expansion
Ryan Siu's insight:

Well researched article about how the fast food industry (Starbucks included) are now competing for shares in specialty coffee. I wish it had more information about trends and peoples behaviors rather than "coffee is a habit forming substance."

I Drank Cannabis Coffee with Seattle Baristas

I Drank Cannabis Coffee with Seattle Baristas | Specialty Coffee | Scoop.it
I visited a lifestyle boutique to try weed-infused bulletproof coffee. Baristas assured me it would "offset caffeine with THC" to achieve a synergistic effect.

Ryan Siu's insight:

Well, this is interesting. Trying to balance the caffeine and the THC sounds like a very difficult proposition.

Clean Coffee Offers A Sanitized Lid Add-On That Protects Against Barista Neglect

Clean Coffee Offers A Sanitized Lid Add-On That Protects Against Barista Neglect | Specialty Coffee | Scoop.it
Bill Levey has spent the last seven years working on a hygienically sealed takeout coffee cup lid called Clean Coffee. Recently he succeeded in creating the much improved coffee lid product. Accord…
Ryan Siu's insight:

I agree that it isn't sanitary to touch the part of the cup that people drink out of. I like the design of this as it doesn't require too much extra material to keep the lid mostly sanitary. But there are 2 simpler solutions.

1. Buy your own to go cup. You clean the lid. You hold onto the lid while the drink is prepared, and put your own lid on after you get it. You are the only person to touch the lid and therefore can't blame someone else if you get sick.

2. Train baristas to not touch the drinking part of the lid when putting on the lid.

The first solution is better for everyone because you waste less material in general. The second solution is just a part of training new and old employees.

Great idea, but adding material to the lid may not be the simplest solution.
