Professional Learning for Specialized Instruction: Possibilities

Professional Learning for Specialized Instruction: Possibilities | Specialized Instruction | Scoop.it
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

For special educators (and support staff)  to provide specialized instruction, professional learning needs to include support around HOW to provide specialized instruction .  Additionally, frameworks are needed within buidings (and districts) to guide special educators in designing when, where, how their work will get done (delivery systems).

For our county, I am seeing pl around Specialized Instruction that might include generic vehicles such as Thinking Routines that can be used in any kind of lesson with most every student. Depth of Knowledge could also support.   This could apply to social workers/psychologists supporting tier 2 lessons around social skills, as well.  Engagement based teaching and learning; building effective relationships with students  may be a nice backdrop (learning happens within the relationship; principles of engagement are a must).

I am also seeing PL around delivery systems.  Many special educators simply don't feel prepared to hop on the inclusion bus.  Others have students for large chunks of time in their own classroom.  Exploring systems will help.

Still churning...........

What Do You Teach? | Special Education & IEP Advisor

What Do You Teach? | Special Education & IEP Advisor | Specialized Instruction | Scoop.it
I've been reading Jan Valle and David Conner's Rethinking disability, a disability studies approach to inclusive practices. Thus far, I've found it to.
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

Really relevant points made here:

In grad school, you must choose:  Gen ed or Spec. Ed.    There is an inherent (i.e., exclusionary) practice in the mere fact that we have to choose what type of educator we want to become: general or special.  The message here seems to be that you can only choose one, thus, excluding the other. general educators and special educators travel different paths to the professional world and this path mirrors the journey our students make.  Although, we choose our educational path as teachers in training, we’re still separated: We have to learn different things, we’re held in different regard to our counterparts and are “transformed in the eyes of our audience.” If we’re working towards making inclusionary practices a part of the educational landscape for our learners, it seems like we should be working towards making inclusion a common practice in graduate schoolOnward we charge.

Cutting-edge Teaching Method-Teaching without Words: TEDTalk

In school, the dominant way of conveying ideas is through words. Words can be great barriers to learning. Matthew Petersen shows and explains how we can learn without words.Matthew Peterson, Ph.D., is Co-Founder, Senior Institute Scientist, and Chief Technical Officer of the MIND Research Institute. He is the creator of MIND's Math instructional software that teaches math to students using a unique non-language-based approach.

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

"Words don't play any role in my mechanism of thought."  Einstein

Language heavy teaching and learning is problematic for many kids.  Education system is set up for language dominant learners and teachers.  This is part of my complaint about the lecture format:  it is biased against so many people!
